I hate these people that ask for requests as soon as the first song starts, just so they get in first.
They usually ask for songs that do not fit with the needs of the paying client and are normally not close friends of the person who's party it is.
The ones I love are the people who ask for a song by the Ministry of sound, nothing wrong with that but they do not know the song names or the actual artist.

I've had someone walk and ask for the song that was playing!! Huey
I had this once also. Funny to see the reaction when they realise the song is actually playing at the moment. Another moment was when someone stood directly infront of the projection screen then started demanding/screaming "turn that disco light off" while pointing at the projector. I pointed over to the video image behind her and laughed as she sheepishly moved to stand elsewhere in the pub.
Back to the topic, depends on the requests. I get alot of metal requests in the town I work in and I just say "I will try to fit it in, but if you and your friends don't dance to it or I start losing the majority of the dancefloor then the song gets killed". Most understand that and the majority of guys that make those sort of requests wont dance. I have no problems cutting a song within 30 seconds if I see the dancefloor part.

I use a "request list form" that includes dedications for private events. If they fit, and I have them, they will eventually be played. On the other hand, I'm usually not inclined to play Black Sabbath in the middle of a dance set, lol!

There are good dance mixes around that do versions of Smoke under the water, Killing in the name of, Smells Like teen spirit and some Metallica songs. I havent heard any good black sabbath mixes tho....yet :-).
There is an Australian DJ & Producer called Nick Skitz that has released some remix cd's called Skitzmetal and Skitzrocks. Some good tunes there for keeping the guys happy while still keeping the majority of girls on the dancefloor.

It also sucks when you actually do play a requested song and the person was in the restroom or whatever then comes back a few songs later and demands it again even though you tell them you just played it. I swear if I had a dollar for every time I heard "Can you play Ke$ha" or "Bedrock" I would be rich as #$@% !

I love to DJ but the most annoying thing is when I see people start to comes towards me ask "Can you play something good?" I stay professional and tell them I can. To my fellow DJ's how do you handle these people?
Ask then for a song artist/title. I will take request for specific songs or types of music.
"Something Good = nothing"
hey can you play some salsa.... OK (I try to work it in my set... if the crowd is not receptive.... it goes out quickly.. if it is... I will continue for a longer period playing other songs)
if you know your crowd and the song is completely out of context..
if you care enough to please this request you can always get on the mic and let your crowd know that
we are going to try something a little different. Talk to you people. do a drink announcement(club owners love this)
if they are not dancing at least they can drink!
