Usually when I hear distortion, it is ear fatigue - but not this time. You see, I record every event in real time via the mixer tape output.
And this time I was able to hear the distortion towards the end. The sound was 'growling' even when moved so slightly the tempo.
Nothing has changed, but I recall hearing this before but dismissing as ear fatigue.
Gigaport HD via the ESI driver AISO mode. XP pro.
Now sounds awesome early on but tends to get icky towards the end. No, not a heat or resource issue. Desktop I built, not a laptop.
Oh, and V 6.0.8
Thanks gang!

Sounds like a hardware issue. Have you tried a different sound card, or mixer? Is this the new Gigaport sound card? I do not see the software changing over time.

This is going to sound silly, but when it happens does it go away if you open the config window, click apply and then OK?

I want to to say, I think?
When the job was over, I diddled in the panel and then launched VDJ and seemed ok.
One thing that is different, the ESI panel does NOT retain the latency. Set at 256 when I want 512. And yes, not while in VDJ.
I might hafta unsinstall and reinstall the driver.
The growling sounds like a gritty sound - even when at zero pitch. And even w/ keylock off.

Sorry I meant open the VDJ config panel when the problem occurs, click apply and then OK...

That is correct. I do not recall, but while 'live' I think so.
What are you thinking?

Ok, here is what I did.
I backed up the original configuration before doing anything.
Uninstalled the ESI drivers and just use the Windows WDM. From there, AISO4ALL set to 1024 and the driver seems to play nice.
In case you ask, yes, I did try WDM mode and does sound 'decent' but would sound much better when the developers fix the left over sound snippet.
Event is Saturday. :) Best test!

I was going to say that I had this when a certain vendor had issues with their soundcard drivers that they later fixed. I'm not aware of anyone having this issue with the ESI cards though?

I remember You said you used Numark PPD9000 Mixer like myself.
I had a similiar issue related to the cheap AC97 soundcards using SPDIF as the software would conflict.
I've just installed 2x M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 it all works like a dream as software supports dual SPDIF (ie up to 4 Cards)

No, bought the mixer but still using a Q-Spand.
The VIA are only for real time recording and playback of media player/websites/etc.

Happened again tonight. prior, I updated to 6.1 and uninstalled ESI drivers and let WDM default play. Then AISO4ALL setup and worked very well.
I almost thought I had a 'corrupted' ESI driver install that finally manifested itself.
Now, I am thinking it is something else.
Are there known issues using tethered cell phones as USB modems? What about other USB devices in general?
Oh, and I pressed 'apply' from the sound setup page and heard a brief dropout. Now that normally does not happen. I think after that, the anomaly went away.
When I started hearing distortion, I turned on my recording app (it captures from the mixer tape out) to hear when and where it flaked out and corrected itself.
I have the following USB devices attached to the unit - not via a hub.
DAC-3
Keyboard
Mouse
Gigaport HD
Linksys USB WiFi
and sometimes the cell phone.
Other minor changes are the occasional fixes from Microsoft.
If anyone would like to hear, lemme know and I cam email a snippet.
Thanks gang!

On my test rig, I removed the USB sound (not the driver) and installed the ASUS HD drivers for on board sound. Now via WDM, VDJ is not happy. But w/ ASIO4ALL, I get access to all the channels and very nice sound quality - and not taking away from the USB bus.
So I might just configure that on my gig rig - but keep the USB at the ready in case.
Again, no idea how this started unless it always happened and just chalked up to ear fatigue.

Ok, more input here...
Not trying to be an AW, but I saw somewhere else the Gport HD gets cranky if CPU usage is high. Well, that does not seem to apply to me.
Put default WDM drivers and run under latest ASIO4ALL. Then set to autoplay. Came back and heard what sounded like distortion both in the mixer's CUE and what was recorded via tape out. restarted VDJ and apparently went away.
Some background...
Last November, I was using an WT192L. It flaked out prior to a gig - the waveform would not move and was getting bad distortion. Chalked up to possibly moisture on the card. It finally cleared up.
After that, I went USB via the Gigaport HD.
Now, is there a correct way to use USB audio? In other words, should it be on it's own USB port - not via a hub?
Are there known issues w/ ESI USB devices in general?
Finally, I am using an American Audio Q-Spand MkII mixer. Do they have issues w/ distortion after a few hours?
Thanks!

Got this distortion again. Swapped the GigaportHD w/ an AG. And using a different mixer.
Sounds like overdriven single - not to the mixer but inside VDJ.
My MP3s are leveled to 89% (ReplayGain) and have options set to Auto+Remember.
When I hover the mouse over the gain, it always shows 100%.
However, an Amazon track that had 50% gain (tool tip) was very distorted.
Could VDJ just not like this hardware?
P5KPL-CM running a Quad Core Intel. 4gb memory. XP SP3 and Nvidia PCI-e card.
Oh, and running AISO4ALL, but was running the native AISO and switching to WDM. Same symptoms.
Has ANYONE seen or heard of this?

e,
First, my Desktop PC runs VDJ fine. It's my laptop that goofs up once and a while.
I have a similar problem with my HP DV9500. I use a Creative Labs ExpressCard for my main out (better than a USB connection), and the internal laptop's sound card for cuing. After an unpredictable time could be an hour, could be 3 hours, my headphones get distorted.
Or worse... all of a sudden I'll get crackling when moving any slider or twisting any knob. All sounds good at startup but then after a while something changes, and I have an issue.
When I detect the distortion or crackling, I change my "Safe Mode" , "Overclock", or "Preset" options to clear it.
I don't know what happens. Sometimes I go all night without a problem. These later versions of VDJ seem to be eliminating some annoyances.
My wish list would first ask for total stability. Next best wish is to give us the ability to change settings without taking an audio hit.
I would really really realy ... also like to be able to move the "Preset" slider from "Fastest" to "Best Quality" without the audio hit.
Try the setting "Safe Mode" on and "Overclock" off. My Desktop PC likes this setting.
regards,
JimJamz

a few days ago, the same happened to me. I was using my m-audio xponent. everything was fine and all of a sudden, I got terrible distortion, This happened about 30 min in. After restarting Cue it was fine. At first I thought I blew the speakers.
