I'd go for the JBLs, myself, but I'd suggest going to a Guitar Center or something so you can hear them side by side, if possible.

Get the Yamahas, They are cheaper in price and sound really good. The highs are louder too. The JBLs sound good too but why pay alot more. In the future, if you ever happen to blow the woofer.. Its cheap to replace. You buy the brand Eminance.. They make the woofers for yamaha.

I've always been a firm believer in "you get what you pay for". I have a friend with a set of the JRX series double 15's. He powers them with a QSC RMX 2450 and they sound amazing. I run the MRX series JBL single 15's (the step up from the ones you're looking at) and they are AWESOME. I'm a big fan of JBL though, not just because of the name but simply because of the clarity and how CLEAN they sound. Your crowd likely won't really pay attention or notice though as long as there's music and you're playing what they want to hear. If cost is an issue, then go with the Yamaha set. But for a few bucks more, it's definitely a good idea to go with JBL. What amp are you going to power these with?

Ive seen the yamahas used... and for one application, they sounded really muddy. But thats probably the DJs other equip.

Either way. everytime ive seen the JBLs used, they have been largely successful and clean. Just my personal experience. What are you using to power them?

Yamaha all the way. The highs CAN'T blow. They are protected AND you get 500 real world watts.

Hi all

Believe me the highs can and do blow on any speaker. Both the Yams and the JBLs have built in protection for over driving the horns but nothing will stop distortion from distroying a compression driver. FACT

The JBL's are my choice but the Yamahas can sound good too. Don't be confused by the power ratings. The methods used to test/rate Yamaha and JBL speakers are different and cannot be used to make a direct comparison.

Try them out if you can get a demo and see what you prefer.

Just an extra point.

Don't expect these speakers to produce heavy bass lines as the cab size will not produce much below 100Hz. If you need the extra bottom end look at adding at least 1 sub Ie JRX118s.

If you wan't to look at a good setup with a sub check out a pair of the smaller JRX112s on stands and a JRX118s sub.

Dude,
I have the Yamaha's and beat them so bad I should be charged with assult! There is tons of bottom end for rooms of 150 people or less. They are light weight and cheap. The Yamaha mixer amp is amazing too! 22 pounds, 500 watts, compression in 4 channels and a monitor main split.
Good luck in your choice. You could rent some gear to be sure you enjoy the mobile world.

I love JBL but the JRX series is garbage, the yamaha's are pretty good. I own 12 of them and they work great, power them with a qsc 2450 and you will have a system that will last you 10 years. I agree with the subwoofer. but they still sund pretty good without it.

The club I dj currently on Fridays has the JBL's & are decent, but when I do karaoke at one of the local college pubs they have the Yamaha's & I have used them also for gigs & prefer the Yamaha over the JBL's.

Get the Yamahas.
Get the Yamahas.
Get the Yamahas
Get the Yamahas
GET THE YAMAHAS!!!!!

GET THE YAMAHAS!!!!!

JBL JRX series are not "bad" but you WILL blow the highs. On the Yamahas, you CAN'T blow the highs.

500 real world watts. not 500 peak but 500 everyday, all day for real 500 watt speakers. I have had 4 pair of Yamaha s115v for years and never had any problems, issues or blowouts.

I have 2 pair of the JBL JRX series and have changed out all high drivers because they are CHEAP. Not inexpensive but CHEAP as in B.S., No Good, Garbage, Not worth it.

Good luck, it's your choice.

+1 on what City says. I can make the JBL's crackle at the club, but NEVER any issue with the YAMAHA's.

We also run 3 sets of Peavey's, but the ones with Black Widow drivers, but they are plastic cab's & don't have the punch of the Yamaha or the power handling.

I def like the Yamahas the best. Little heavier to lug & lift on the stands, but we are all big boys & girls right?

Mine as well. While I agree Yamaha is a great speaker JBL was making speakers when Yamaha was only making motorcycles.
Zoom!

there was a term for JBLwe all used to use back in my sales days,

'Junkie But Loud' lol (I do like JBL btw)

We had names like that for many manufacturers though.

Hi Renee,

I wish I could agree with you, well... I can agree that JBL was making speakers while yamaha was still making keyboards and motorcycles, but between these two spesific speakers, the JBL JRX115 to the Yamaha S115V, hands down, bar none, he will be happier...MUCH happier with the Yamaha's.

I own several pair of both sspecific speakers and the Yamaha's out perform the JBL's on every level. Power, durability, sound and components.

The JRX series is akin to the soundfactor series. THEY SUCKED. (apologies to anyone that owns them).

JRX series are JBL's bottom of the line speaker. it's their entry level speaker. Thats not to say that they suck but the Yamaha S115V's are better in quality, sound and components. it's a better built cabinet, has a better crossover, has a WAAAAY better high compression driver, and has a better REAL WORLD power rating plus no matter what.... you can't blow the horn.

Oh yeah.... they are less expensive as well.
On top of that....Yamaha makes good bikes as well...

I don't know about the "Entry level" system.... I use these. (Three way system with ACTIVE crossover)
It's all about what you can afford, portability, personal prefrence and of course "opinion." is everything.

I love opinions and I prefer a Harley) (Great photo of the rice burner though!) LMAO

It's been a while huh Renee.... still quick witted.

I see you have MRX series. Those ARE MRX bottoms right? Damn good speakers as well as the SRX series. I own a few MRX single 18's.

It is my opinion and I express emphasis on the "MY" in the my opinion. JRS series is not up to par with anything else JBL makes. again, yhey are not bad speakers but in "MY" opinion, The Yamaha's are better. And they cost less.

MY opinion based on ownership of both speakers.

Go ahead Renee...I await the flaming. lol

DAMN...

I just noticed that the thread started back in.....JUNE 2008.

It's all a moot point.

I also didn't notice djrobinhamilton dug up this old post.... Why? (He's A Yamahauler I guess) :^)

City, I’m too old these days to work up a good spark much less a flame. (Yes those are Mrx (Dual 18’s) which is why I need the Qsc 50-50 to drive them.

I still have a pair of Peavey bottoms in the garage with the 12 volt light bulb as the “breaker” with the famous BW Speakers that I blew out every three months and had to buy the “replacement baskets”. I also owned a pair of Cerwin Vega speakers that were built like a tank and sounded worse. Debating equipment brands is like a dog chasing a parked car.

Nice to hear from you City. :^)
