I hooked up my laptop to my external Behringer VMX300 via a 1/8" cable that splits into an RCA. The 1/8" comes out of the headphone output on the laptop and one RCA plug goes into one channel 1 and the other RCA goes into channel 2. The output is mono. But I am able to cue each deck in the headphones. The problem is sound quality is POOR! Particularly the bass is missing. I've messed with the external mixer EQ, the VDJ EQ, and even the internal soundcard EQ. Still not very pleased with the sound quality. Any suggestions? Would an external soundcard fix this problem?

Firstly, it sounds like you have the left and right channels of your single stereo output split to the mixer inputs. If you don't have a multi channel card then you can't expect to run a stereo signal to the mixer. Those RCA ends are left and right, not channel 1 & 2. After you solve that problem when you get your new multi channel card search the forum for "latency" if you have trouble setting it up. There are posts with tools you may find useful. Often there are apps running in the background that frequently communicate with the cpu causing drop outs in the sound and various other imperfections. The latency tools can troubleshoot the problem...sometimes. Hope this helps, good luck!

I was told that by running the sound the way I described above, which is MONO, that there would not be a difference in the sound quality. I just can pan the audio ouput from right to left and vice versa. I'm asking if an external sound card will improve the sound quality? especially the bass.

I think it would because it would be in stereo. Have you tried running both rca's as left and right on one channel? If you do then you should notice a huge difference in sound.

I have not tried that. But I will as soon as I get (hopefully) a new laptop. Mine crashed last week. As soon as I get a new one and get everything running, I'll try your suggestion.
Thanks.
Thanks.
