Hello all. I am running Win XP on a pc. I have my entire music collection on the internal and on an external. Both drives are part of VDJ's database. I mostly make changes on my external drive and then copy over the internal drive's contents.I was analyzing some music using the internal drive's db and realize that whenever I update from external to internal, the db changes are lost. I decided to then analyze using the external drive and that would enable me to pass on the db info when I update from external to internal. That doesn't seem to be the case. I overwrote the internal collection with the external's update changes after analyzing a few songs, but the changes didn't show up in the database.
is there a way to analyze or edit music on ONE drive where it would then show up in VDJ for BOTH drives?

Is that a feature in VDJ or a separate program?

any copying or moving of songs must be done within VDJ, otherwise the database is unable to track the changes..

Q:: Where are my cue points stored? or I lost my cue points, where did they go?
A:: VDJ stores all the information it collects in .XML databases..
If you also use an external or secondary drive to store your music, a database will ALSO be placed their..
Before making any major changes you should backup those databases..
The first one (on a windows computer) is located in your "documents/virtual dj " folder
called "VirtualDJ Database v6.xml"
The second database will be located on the secondary/external drive on the top level or 'root level'.
called "VirtualDJ Local Database v6.xml" (IE: if your external drive is called F:\ , if you open the F: drive the "local" database should be visible
VDJ stores information for each song and relates it to name of the file AND THE PATH!!!
this is very important..
If the original path to a song was F:\My Music\Rock\Kiss - Beth.mp3
and you change the path too F:\Music\Rock\Kiss - Beth.mp3
ALL the songs in the "music" folder will lose their information!
If you need to move or copy songs to a different location, you need to do this within VDJ..
IE: select the songs in the VDJ browser. 'right click' and select 'File operations'::'Move to' or 'Copy to'
this will automatically update the databases..
using explorer (or some other program) to move or copy or rename files means VDJ will lose track of those files and all information related to it.
making an EXACT copy/backup of an external drive is ok (the one exemption), as the original file path stays intact..

Thank you very much. I will try this from now on. As for the database xml file, I was monitoring it while I analyzed some songs. After I was done and closed VDJ, I noticed that the "date modified" field stayed the same. Should it not have updated with today's date? I reopened VDJ and noticed that the bpm and cue points that I just added were still there. Is there a reason for this? Also, there is one xml fiel file with a user name in parenthesis and one without? Which one should I go by?

Hippydog...I tried what you suggested with one file. I analyzed and created 2 cue points for a song on the internal HD. I then performed a
"copt to" from my external drive to the internal drive and the BPM and cue points were deleted. The same as when I just did copy and paste from windows explorer. I need this to work because it's more convenient to update my library on the ext drive when I am not at home. I was to be able to update my internal drive without losing information

Sounds like your past my limited "expertise" ;-) sorry..
I did do a double check to make sure it worked for me and it did..
90% of my music/videos are on my external 1 Tera hard drive..
I opened up VDJ, Picked a known song from there and right clicked the song
Selected "file Operations" >> Copy to >>
VDJ then opened the standard browser window and I selected a folder in C:\~~\My documents\My Music
I then went to My documents\My music\
using VDJ and the song was there WITH THE CORRECT CUE POINTS ETC...
of course this is in Windows XP, If your using Vista you may be experiencing other issues related to "security permissions"
Having said all that..
I personally don't sync or move my files around much..
I've found it much easier to just keep everything on the external and move that between computers..
Keeping everything on the external means backing up and organizing is much simpler.. (i just backup the whole drive to a second identical external HD)

I think I found a way to make it work. It seems to update nicely if I analyze the files on the ext drive and then copy over to the internal drive. Thanks for your help, Hippydog. I still don't see why the database file doesn't change size or its modified date after closing VDJ. Anyone else have the answer to that?
