Is there a way to create a Do-Not-Play list. What I am envisioning is that when such a list is in use, the following would occur:
1) The icon would change color
2) If you are in automix mode, the do-not-play songs would be skipped
3) You could not drag songs on the do-not-play list onto one of the players.

Hmm, dont know how you would change the color of the icon or skip when using auto mix but you could make a folder thats titled "Do Not Play" and every time you run into 1 of those songs move it to that folder then right-click on that folder and click on "Remove From Search DB" then they atleast wont show up when doin a search but youd still have them if someone requested 1 of them.
Not what you want but its a start.

We used to be able to tag comments. Can we still do that?

Who is this DNP list coming from?
is it something that would change daily? Weekly? monthly?
how many songs would be on this list?

What do you mean " tag comments"? If you mean edit them then yes you still can.

You don't need one, just delete the offending files, or better still turn up for the gig and do the job we are paid to do and DJ, yep your right, I hate playlists of any sort.

There is a problem with removing folders from the search idea.
1. You can't do this with Virtual or Filtered Folders.
2. If You are using iTunes to rip then this is also difficult to do because the way folders are sorted by iTunes, not impossible just a lot of work, and I wouldn’t want to open that spaghetti bowl if I could help it.
This is why I've suggested and made a case for a new option in the Browser to Exclude or Include "Genre Types" Just like we have now for file types to Include or Exclude from the browser search list, Like Video, Karaoke or even Music files so you Don't have to deal with the clutter of all the other file type you Don't need in your Browser Search List.
Link to that Thread if you like is: http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/124787/Wishes_and_new_features/Exclude__Genre_Types__Option_In_The_Search_View.html
The same case could be made for the "Genre Types" where for Example, if your gig is a "Rock Party" you wouldn't need to see Hip-Hop;Latin;ect or the reverse can be said for any "Genre Type" depending on the venue, If you’re going to need several "Genre Types" then just check the ones that apply.
This also adds a dimension that can't be said about folders, and that “Its global” no matter where you are in the Browser access will be a "No Brainer", you wouldn't even have to get into "Filter folder Hieroglyphics" just select from a existing Genre List to Include or Exclude option in the same place as for File Types.
The request from Sawdust12 would be easier to do without much thought just add "Don't Play" to the "Genre Field", examples;
1. Just go to the Info file menu and in the Genre Field add "Don't Play" to whatever genre type you already have for the song, If its R&B;Don't Play or Salsa;DP or whatever scheme you want, Just Keep It Consistent.
This is especially useful for "Mobile DJ's" or DJ's with very large libraries...
In my case I have a lot of Audio Instrumental Backing tracks and Karaoke Audio Tracks in other languages that can't easily be removed from the Browser Search List when not needed and just adds to the clutter.
Hope they can make this happen...
Thanks

DNP lists, IMO would be temporary - Ie, you get a list from a client (especially weddings) for songs that should not be played.
Removing them from the search DB would be a bit harsh - especiially if you had duplicates.
The only time I would see a use for this is if there were 2 or more DJ's sharing an event which means they may all not know the DNP's.
However a simple piece of paper and a check before I search/load a song usually does the trick ;-)

Man, I don't put that much thaught in such a thing. If you have a DNP you most likely have it on a paper. Just look it over before your shift to have mental picture then glance down at it once a while to remind yourself - thats it. Why put soooo much effort in something thats done for decades with no effort.
Now if you have 50 songs or something then you have to focus that much more but you'll make it.

Agree with gadgetman. Just a piece of paper with the NP list.

Try using the comments field to tag songs that should not be played.
Make sure that the comments column is shown in the browser.
Then edit the comments of the appropriate songs and add the words DO NOT PLAY
You can even create a filter folder (Blue icon) and enter the following for the filter:
comment contains "DO NOT PLAY"
This will then list all your songs that are flagged to not play, allowing you to easily find them to remove the tag after the event.
