i have a numark DM 1475 an want to use it as the main crossfader and not vdj
Use two soundcards, or one 4-channel (2 stereo) output card, set VDJ to external mixer mode and you're done. It's all documented in the "Setup Quickstart" guide included with VDJ on page 7.

It will work just fine. You only need two channels to be able to mix songs. Maya44 has sufficient outputs to output 2 decks (Left/right) in VirtualDJ separately to 2 channels of your mixer.
Your friend may have thought that you were just using the headphone output of your laptop.
More channels are only really needed for advanced setups, such as using 4 decks.
NOTE: Most 2 channel mixers have source select switches that allow you to connect more than 2 sources (E.g: CD players) and switch between them.
