Topic: PC to mixer: USB input, phono output?

Dieses Thema ist veraltet und kann veraltete oder falsche Informationen enthalten.

We've been asked to run a second DJ upstairs at our normal venue, but I only have the one Hercules RMX and that's needed downstairs.

Will need to be able to connect the PC laptop direct to the club sound system.

I'm presuming we'll need a device that connects via USB to the laptop, and has quarter inch phono connections output from this.

However, no idea whether such a device exists!

Not sure if this is even the correct solution?

Any advice/pointers very much appreciated!

Some Pro sound cards may have the outputs that you require.

However, with this setup, the DJ will have no backup in the event of computer failure. Installing a DJ audio mixer (Even a basic one) would be advisable, so that a backup device can also be connected and utilised in an emergency. This will also allow the DJ to use any sound card of their own choice, even the one built into their laptop if necessary.

NOTE: You will need another VirtualDJ Pro license for the DJ upstairs or they will need to bring their own licensed version with them on their own computer.

The End User License Agreement (EULA) allows you to have the software installed on up to two computers at any one time, providing that they are both for your own personal use and will not be used simultaneously (E.g: Second installation as a backup or for practising at home is OK, allowing a friend or another DJ to use it is NOT allowed.)

Thanks for the reply - I was expecting that he'd simply install the demo version - it's a one-off gig, and unfortunately it looks like we may not be continuing after the next one anyway - north Scotland isn't really up for a rock nightclub by the looks! The upstairs is only scheduled for use for two hours anyway.

Is there not a simple and accessible basic USB device that may be available, or will it really need a soundcard?

We're playing rather than mixing tracks so won't be looking to use a mixer.

I suggest a trip to your local Maplin explain the problem and I'm sure they will furnish you with all manner of connectors and cables - or just buy the components and build your own.

You'll need something along the lines of a 3.5mm stereo to twin phono connector (plugs into your laptop), then a twin phono to 1/4" jack cable.

Just out of interest, if you are just playing music, rather than mixing, why not just use Windows Media Player?

Thanks for the reply, Simon - will do. :)

We may not be mixing samples, but we are still fading tracks in and out to ensure a continuous music experience, pretty much like we did when we used to DJ with vinyl in the 80's and 90's. Virtual DJ makes the whole management process simple and familiar. Just playing tracks via Media Player just wouldn't be DJ'ing. :)

No worries...I seem to spend my life in my local Maplins, getting components for some project or another.

With regards to using WMP, you can set it to crossfade between tracks in the playlist.

1) Start WMP

2) Go to "Now Playing" (you may have to load a track, can't remember).

3) Right click on the main window and select "Enhancements" --> "Crossfading and Auto Volume Levelling"

5) In the area that appears (in WMP 12 it's a pop up box), turn on crossfading, then select the amount of overlap (in seconds).

I apologise if I'm teaching grandma to suck eggs...and your right...it ain't DJ'ing, just a human jukebox.
