Hey, I've run into a bit of a electronic issue and was wondering if anyone could offer any assistance.
At the moment I'm using the free edition with plans to buy the full version of the software and a nice all in one controller. In the mean time though, I'm playing at a friend's next weekend and while I'm aware I can't use any hardware with the free edition, the most important thing at the moment is using the cue for my headphones while simultaneously playing out loud. Would a headphone splitter suffice in this situation and does the free edition support the headphone cue function for this? Much appreciated.

It depens which kind of soundcard you are using!
If you have a 4:1 or better soundcard, it works like a charm. Prelisten, cue however you call it.
The two soundcards option is limited up to 10min for use.
Means you use the internal soundcard and a additional USB soundcard.
You can also split the soundcard output from a "normal" soundcard output, but it's mono then.
Not nice for a party i guess! ;-)

Okay- thanks a lot for your help. It looks like I'll have to buy a soundcard then.
What do you mean by "the two soundcards option is limited to 10 mins of use"? What two soundcards?

Two soundcards means, you use (example) for the master output your Notebook/PC internal Soundcard and for prelisten/cueing a additional USB Soundcard.
If you use a 4:1 etc or a Soundcard Like Audio2/4DJ, it is only one Soundcard for the master outprut (PA) and prelisten (Headphone)!

Limited to 10 minutes means that you can try out Pro features for 10 minutes each time the software. After that, it will revert back to the limitations of Home FREE. See http://www.virtualdj.com/products/comparison.html
Home FREE is for mouse and keyboard mixing and only allows an internal 5.1/6.1/7.1 surround sound card to be used for master+headphones, or the mono split option through your laptop's headphone output socket. Home FREE does not support the use of external sound cards or two cards (Except during the 10 minute trial of Pro features of course.)
NOTE: Home FREE is not for commercial use. It is for non-commercial (Unpaid) use at home only.

Sorry, you did say that about the 2 soundcards. So are you suggesting i buy this: http://www.audiolines.com/DJ-Gear/Sound-Cards/Native-Instruments-AUDIO-2-DJ-USB-Soundcard and everything will be wonderful? I looked at Apple>About this Mac>More Info>Audio and it doesn't say anything about my soundcard...thanks for your help so far...it's the first time I've attempted anything like this on my new laptop as indeed i only downloaded virtual dj last month after emigrating and having to leave all my vinyl behind :(

So no external sound cards whatsoever then.
Rightio then, looks like I'm buying Pro right now then! What's my minimum hardware requirements now then? Please bear in mind this is ONLY a friend's house party and NOT a commercial or professional gig! And it's nearly Christmas and I'm not rolling in cash. Thanks for your help everyone.
P.s I'd also like someone to confirm that when I download the full version I'm not going to lose 40+ hours work of cues and bpm scanning...!

So no external sound cards whatsoever then. By the way, the Configuration menu tells me I have a 4.1 soundcard.

If it is really a 4.1 Soundcard, it should work. But only you can test it. ;-)

Normaly it should work, but it is better to make a backup from your database.
Make a copy of each database XML

Home FREE does not support external sound cards (Except during 10 minute trial of Pro features), but if you do not need to use MIDI controllers, timecode or full-screen video, you could purchase VirtualDJ Basic instead of Pro: http://www.virtualdj.com/products/basic.html - You can also upgrade from this at any time to the full Pro at a discount.
Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ will work for master output and headphone pre-listen in either VirtualDJ Basic or Professional.
Cue points, BPM, etc. will be retained when upgrading, but if this information is important to you, then you should backup your database on a regular basis. If using external drives, you should also backup the database found at the root of each drive. Also, please ensure that you backup your entire music collection.

Thanks for your help guys.
I've just ordered a BCD3000 which should be here tomorrow, so I will be buying VDJ Pro later on today (rather, Mum will, I live in Korea and my bank card is issued by Bank of China).
I would just like assurance that upgrading is not going to wipe my database of cues and bpms?

Yo, check me and my VDJ Pro membership out!!
Thanks SO much for all of your help...I suppose that really, I always knew what I needed to do...buy the full edition and some nice hardware!
The transition was seamless and all of my cues and BPMs have been saved.
While I've already started a thread, I have one little niggle which I can't find the solution to anywhere else on the VDJ forums or on the web...
last week my dedicated iTunes playlist for my mix (I cant get the hang of VDJ playlist) decided that it wasn't going to add any more songs that I'd recently added to iTunes. Hell, I can't even find them under the general 'Music' folder of iTunes when searching in VDJ. I can only access them by going to my 'Recently Added' playlist, and even then, I have to search for the new track manually (i.e. I can't type it in). I hope I've explained this semi-coherently, anyone know a quick-fix?

For the songs to be found when searching in VirtualDJ, you must add them to your VirtualDJ database.
Use VirtualDJ to browse to the folder(s) where they are located, right-click and choose Add to search DB.

Hi, I've got a question following on from this discussion.
I'm in a very similar position as the creator of this thread, I'm DJing a party next week so it's quite a simple set-up; basically just a smallish PA. If it goes well and I plan on doing it regularly, I will definitely be getting Virtual DJ Basic/Pro
I understand that you can't plug in any hardware like a mixer when using VirtualDJ Home. I can also see that when splitting the PA and the headphones using a Y-Cable, the output through the PA would be mono. However, if I select the USB soundcard option, the output through the laptop speakers is still dual.
So my question is, if I went out and brought a USB Soundcard and plugged in my headphones through them, would I be able to have normal sound through the PA?
Cheers!
