Topic: Using Bought/Premade Mix CDs/MP3s

Dieses Thema ist veraltet und kann veraltete oder falsche Informationen enthalten.

Hi Guys – hope someone can help.

I use premade/bough mix CDs for background or occasionally for a bit in a show. I know these CDs are made as one long music track and the CD catalogue is just a list of start points through that mix so you can go to any of the tracks in the mix. These CDs can only be copied by making them as a disc image, they cannot be made into individual tracks and burnt back (unless some one can tell me how to do it)

The CDs are RIPed using itunes to convert and tag these as MP3s and play back fine from an itunes playlist (very occasional tiny gaps – but usable). However when you use VDJ playlist set for back to back play you always get gaps between the tracks.

My question is how can I get rid of these gaps – can/should I RIP them using VDJ or do I need to change some settings somewhere. I don’t want them as one long MP3 as it useful to have access to individual tracks – unless there is a format that has this ability.

I have looked on the forum but can’t find an answer – if there is one let me know where.

It's an interesting one...

Firstly when ripping I always use Window Media Player to MP3 at 320KBPS.
Secondly, when I need to create a mix cd (for promo or whatever), I add the "mixed" tracks, in order, to a Windows Media Player playlist and burn (with the option of "no gaps" selected - it's in the Burn options). This creates a seamless mix CD, but with access to the individual tracks.

Thirdly, continous play in VDJ....I'm sure a script could be written that invokes relay play between two pre-defined decks - along the lines of when the outgoing track reaches 0ms remaining, it will start the other deck automatically and so on - might play with this idea later.

Simon - Thanks for the suggestion with making the CDs - I have tried with nero set to gapless but this didn't work but I wasn't sure if it was a burn problem causing the gaps or the original RIP.

Your suggestion for a script that would start one deck to another is an interesting one - as opposed to using the automix back to back option.
If you are going to script an auto start between decks there would also need to be some script in order to load the next track from the playlist/mix list into the deck when a track finishes.

This would have a lot of possibilities as an option in general use that could be switched on or off. I use the right hand playlist alot to set up a sequence list for parts of the eveing - its quite a fluid list based partly on stored playlists and partly on experience/feel for the dance floor/eveing etc. But I always have to drag the track to the deck or click it from the search list. Being able to have the next track auto load ready for play from the righthand playlist or sidelist would be good - the setup configuration needs some consideration as some people use 2 decks (simple A B A B . .) play and some people use 4 decks or variations on this. I can't see you having much use for an auto load arrangement on a 4 deck system but then each DJ has his own style.

(I think this tread is heading towards the Wishes and new features thread).

Any further suggetions or improvements would be appreciated.

Derek, looking through the verbs available in VDJScript, there is "relay_play : enable or disable the decks to automatically start playing when the opposite deck reached its end"...so if the verb is still active in Version 7, that would be the starting point.

Thanks Simon - not sure where to put it though - I know I need to go into mappers and select a device or keyboard - just not sure where next

Hi Derek, hi Simon,

Derek, i've been waiting for the same thing than you : no gap between songs (when it comes from a premixed cd).

I thought that in automix mode / None (back to back), it could work. But as you say, we have very little (but annoying) gaps.

Simon, i didn't try the verb "relay_play", but i think it only makes a relay play between two decks in automix mode, but i'm not sure that it removes the little gaps between songs ...

It's very frustrating because you can play this kind of songs gaplessly in simple free media players like Windows media player or MediaMonkey.

I hope that a little improvement could change this (in a very near future).

As it's not a problem from the pc, i made a discussion about gapless playback in the General discussion :
http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/141249/General_Discussion/When_VDJ_will_be_able_to_play_ripped_mixed_CDs_with_no_gap__.html

and (because it's apparently not possible yet) in the wishes and new features :
http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/141308/Wishes_and_new_features/Gapless_playback.html

Hope it can help all VDJ users
