I know Ive posted here several times already asking similar questions, but I am just very stuck on what hardware I need to purchase. Id say Im past the point of complete beginner when it comes to mixing and beatmatching. Out of excitement to start and to become acquainted using a controller with Virtual DJ, I purchased a Hercules MK4. Now Im very close to the point of looking for first gigs at college, such as keggars and what not, but the MK4 just looks and feels very unprofessional. Im not sure whether I should just upgrade the all in one controller, purchasing something like the 4-MX or the DN-MC6000, or I should purchase a pair of CDJs or Turntables. I guess my question is, for house parties with anywhere from 30-100 people, do I need anything more than a decent controller? I just don't know if Id could be taken as a serious DJ without something such as a Turntable or CDJ.
Any help is appreciated,
DJ Mack

Hi babe. well, what about getting a nice Professional Flight case and inside have your Laptop, An RMX/4MX and either 1 or 2 CDJ's... (i have 1) this means i ca use Cd's AND my RMX and it all looks nice and "fessional" too
I rate the RMX and think the 4MX isnt that much better (worse in some respects) The RMX is nice and heavy and is made from Aluminium not Plastic. No one has said my set up isnt "fessional" enough and if they do, then once i start playing they generally shut up pretty quickly.
Hope that helps some.

It depends on how portable you wish to be.
If you need a all-in-one controler, then the MC6000 is the best choice for now.
I would though suggest to buy an external analogue mixer (4 chan preferable Pioneer, Denon Allen), since its the most essential part of a dj rig. A multi input output prof sound card would also be a good choice (NI Audio4dj, 8dj, Hercules Trim 4&6, Maya 44USB etc) Then you may chose the way you control the software. Midi controler, MidiCDplayers or Cds with Timecodes.

Im about as basic as you get because I am a beginner and have been getting some equipment together for house parties etc. My gear consists simply of my laptop (Dell Inspiron 15R), an external harddrive, a cheapish USB external soundcard, a Hercules MP3 e2 (doesnt have built in soundcard) connected to my laptop, then my skytec amp and speakers connected to the external soundcard which seems to do the trick at the moment but then again I am only a beginner and hosue parties would be the limit.
I am looking to upgrade also, but it is a toss up between the Numark mixtrack pro and the Hercules Rmx. I have heard good things about both but I would like a new and fresh one, so for the money at the moment I am favouring the mixtrack pro, but thats just me. I think it really depends on you as a DJ I feel comfortable using the small, basic controller at the moment whilst im tuning my skills, but I am also looking to upgrade however it wouldnt be a massive loss to me if i didnt.

Hey thanks for the input everyone, I've come to the conclusion that I'm either going with something like this, http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/ele/2144264995.html or just buying an mc6000. I'm still stuck on whether or not I want/need an allinone controller or going the timecode route.

Not for nothing, but you can have the best professional equipment money can buy and still suck as a DJ. It is not what you use, but how you use it. I mean people can talk all they want about your equipment, but the bottom line is, did you rock the party. That is what most people will remember about you. Out of 100 people, how many of them do you thing will care about what equipment you have, maybe 5%? Who gives a shit about 5%? Me, I don't give a shit about what anybody thinks. Do your research, and choose wisely. The setup you have now will be fine, if you know how to use it.

The best thing to do is check out your local dj store. Some decks may look nicer on the website but not what you expected when you actually have it in hand. Every piece of equipment has a different feel. just because some decks may have a jog wheel, it doesnt mean its going to respond the same way like another deck with a Jog wheel.
If you really want a Nice compact deck with good jog wheels, Get the Vci 300 Mk2. I owned a hercules Rmx, NS7, VCi 300 & Mk2, The VMS4, Hc4500 etc. I had everything. Not everything feels and responds the same.
If you want to buy equipment at a very goold price. Check out this website but you have to call for a better price. Shipping is free too. http://www.proaudiostar.com/

Got to echo AMaHM really.
If the party is dead, it doesn't matter what you're playing the music with, the party is dead. If the party's full but nobody's dancing, it doesn't matter what kit you've got, you haven't played the right music yet. And if you're rockin' the party, then it definitely doesn't matter what kit you've got, you're rockin' the party! if some idiot comes over and tells you you're not a real DJ, just point to the dance floor and smile.
If you do want to look professional, make or buy a flight case, or maybe even just put some sort of barrier around the front of the table you're set up on so people can't see what's there so easily... A 10 inch high little wall around 3 sides of the table you're working on will give it a bit of a DJ booth feel. You can buy ready made ones somewhere, but it'd be pretty easy to make one out of 3 bits of plywood 2 hinges and some black paint.

Whats good folks, I have been djing for about 2 years now and when i first started I was in the same situation. My advice to you is to go to your local dj store and try out all the controllers they have in stock(RMX, VMS4,Mixdeck...) and decide on which one fits you the best. Make sure your controller has a built in asio soundcard though, because in the future if you decided to start using timecodes or turntables it will be a lot easier for you to grow into if you are already using a controller/mixer that you are familiar with.
Personally i started with a RMX, then later i bought 2 Stanton STR8-60 Turntables used on craigslist for 100. Since i have been fortunate enough to stay busy with weddings and parties i now have invested in a ttm57sl and some str8-150s. Just take your time and work your way up. Rock the party with what you have and the rest will come.
Thanks,
Brad

uuuuuuuuuhhhhhhh i definitely disagree with that
the best advice you got was AMaHM ......
the only thing better than a great connection with your crowd and rockin' the party
is .....nothing
the only thing you can rely on 100% and the only thing that makes you better is YOU
