Topic: Residency DJ vs Mobile DJ - Page: 1

I was asked what do I prefer, having a residency or being a mobile DJ? While both of them have their pros and cons, I gave the edge to one of them by a narrow margin. Yet I'm curious to find out what my peers prefer?

Do you prefer having a RESIDENCY or being MOBILE and WHY???

RESIDENCY plain and simple! Why cause its less stuff to pack up and haul away, lol!!

At Least you don't have to carry crates of vinyl anymore, lol!

To be honest I prefer having a mix of both as I do now.

Being a resident DJ is nice as said above with not having ton lug a ton of gear in and out on the nights you DJ and having a steady income. however playing the same type of music night after night to the same type of crowd can get monotinous.

Private parties, to me are much more rewarding financialy and the crowds seem to appreciate what you are doing for them alot more than your average bar/club/pub patron.

Like what was said above, a healthy balance of both is just what the Dr ordered.

i do both

Did the residency thing for a few years, and have to say that I prefer the Mobile DJ business better.
Enjoy the challenge of always getting different types of people out on the dance floor.

Yes it is much more equipment to haul around, but the mobile DJ market allows me to charge more for weddings and such. This allows me to keep buying new toys, even if I only get 1 or 2 gigs a month. (April and May being wedding months, I stay completely booked for those) I really enjoy the aspect of meeting with the clients ahead of time and working with them to make sure everything is exactly how they expect it. Creating the perfect, classy atmosphere and having the client come up at the end of the night saying the event was better than they could ever imagine. From setting up the lighting just right, to playing exactly the types of music the crowd is looking for (because I usually get a little help ahead of time when I meet with them).

To me, it's more rewarding to get the ol' grandparents and different types of crowds that wouldn't normally dance out of their chairs and dancing, than those people who are already coming to a club to dance.

Guess it's just a trade off.

Residency = continuous income, less equipment to haul, less control over the atmosphere (lighting), typically same type of music week to week, less time to get up and running (<20 mins)

Mobile = greater income per event, more equipment to haul, more control over the atmosphere (lighting), wide variety of music (depending on client), more time to get up and running (sometimes > 3 hours).

+1 ^ That pretty much sums it up for myself also!

residency, then i dont haveta lug my sh*t! ;-p

On the move, that way your fresh each week even if your playlist is weeks old.

Both. Mobiles pay more and are fun with a fresh crowd and more of a music range.

Steady gig at club/bar is great as well. Different crowd different music programming.

Both are rewarding.

Then there is the hybrid. The residency that you need to set up your own equipment at a lesser rate week after week.

BOTH.

I like the Residency because it gives me a steady platform to work from. Also, depending on the music desired for mobile gigs, I can invite potential customers to my steady venue to hear me play. On the down side, it doesn't pay as much.

On the other hand, I really enjoy the mobile events because it's all me. My equipment, my setup, and I'm in complete control from start to finish. Also, they pay way more than residencies do.

Agree with coments so far . . .

One more consideration. Over the years I have done a mix of club/pub residencies and all the mobiles (weddings, birthdays, dinner dances etc) but now I'm over 40 its much more difficult to get club work - yes patrons are agesist - but I can sitll continue doing mobile and charging good money, 20 years experience is a very good selling point to alot of customers particularly wedding guests and dinner dances that pay well. They are put off by a 20 year old who they expect to be playing a particular type of current music - no matter how good he/she may be.

I'm not putting any residency DJ's down as I used to be one, but I wouldn't go back to it. Also customers who are a few years older often have more disposable income and are prepared to pay a premium for THEIR party to have a good DJ/disco with the right ambience etc. (There again I may just be getting old!)

I'm surprised to see so many DJ's enjoy doing both!

I personally prefer to be a Mobile DJ now, because the very reasons of no more vinyl, I'm the boss, so I get paid what I'm worth and I have much more fun, plus I'm not a night person anymore (married life), so the latest most of my events are done no later than 1 A.M. with a few rare occasions over that time.

well coach as i said b4 in the chat... i rather do club gigs instead of mobile gigs even tho there is more $$$ in mobile gigs.... to much stress tryna please everyone and also i feel like mobile gigs you really need some sort of crew a partner or two..... makes thing so much better but i didn't exactly have that so perhaps thats why i oppose mobile gigs....

I remember fam,

See after being in the game for so long, I was able to master a format to load and unload my equipment very fast solo and since I no longer have to carry any vinyl, it has only made life easier for me, lol. As for pleasing a crowd, even though I have to play different genres of music, I've learned how to read a crowd very quickly and get a feel for what will keep them on the dance floor. Example, I did a bar-mitzpah where I thought the kids would be the only ones dancing to top 40's and hip hop, but surprise surprise, even grandma was like jamming to 50 cent, "I get money."

Don't get me wrong, I'd still do a residency if the price is right, but honestly no longer my cup of tea, due to me not being a night person anymore. Some would say even I am too old to do a residency, but the quality I bring to table states otherwise.

Like I told you be4, keep rocking, your time will come, because you have a tight set!

+1

Residency DJ

1 + you only take the music you need
2 + free drinks sometimes
3 + people can't really come up to you (in talk for hours)

Mobile DJ

1 + MORE MONEY !!!!!!
2 + you are your on boss (for the most part)
3 + having a good mobile gig will get you more gigs (most of the time)

I like Mobile DJing for the money (I have bills) :)

COACH you already know Club gigs i play the music i like hot tunes and i dont worry much about catering to every one present because in a club if its hip hop night then its HIP HOP... but i do have big respect for the mobile djs thats hard work.
