Topic: DJing with a desktop? - Page: 2

Not only did I do it for speed and performance, but to not have 3 external hard drives to hook up plus USB drop outs ect. It saved my time with setting up to have all drives in one and more than enough USB's. Takes 10 sec to hook up the monitor, power cord, keyboard and mouse in one and the Denon 4500. Best move I ever made since going digital...

Hard drive technology is changing, soon there won't be any restrictions when using a laptop you'll be able to have the same size as you would in a desktop which will be more than enough for anyone.

It's funny how so many on the forums struggle with laptops when I've DJ'd exclusivly from a laptop over the past 12 years, even in really hot climates outside without issue.

you don't need a lot of power for what we do, the power required is out there in every store, and it's cheap.

I used an old laptop that somebody lent me (My Father) a couple of years ago while I was messing about with my gig machine, I couldn't beleive how it handled, I could do everything and it was below the minimum spec.

I just spent £800 on a refubished dell, the spec is a lot better than the old one i was using however you just don't notice the difference anymore when DJing as the spec you already had was good enough.

I think this is a mind set thing more than anything else, as DJ's we get used to spending a lot of money on gear and sometimes don't know when to stop. I am also guilty of this probably more than most but recently I put it into perspective as I'm happy with the products I'm using and the performance they give.

Oh Yeh

The first machine I built did the job fine but you know us boys and our toys. I guess it makes more difference with video stuff but for audio only a very basic machine does just fine.

No, video isn't different, pretty much any old spec lappy can pull it off with ease now.

The only thing I can't vouch for is top class video scratching as I don't do it.

Video is different, simply because of the size of the file. I can't see a laptop having 4TB drives any time soon. I have 5 drives in my machine, 4TB drives and a 100 for programs, and will be switching to 4 2TB drives for my next build. I have a 500g external for karaoke, which will be incorporated into an internal with the next build. I only do video, and can have 8 effects, live camera feed, be online, download files, rip files, net-search, and not be afraid. I also don't worry about the weight or form factor, I'm not a little girl. I also like my particular case, because I bring it in every night, and it fits on my desk. There is no right or wrong way to do this, it's just what works for you.
