I am still learning after 43 years. One thing we have all learned is, it's what the crowd likes, not what you like. We all know DJs that can't mix two eggs in a bowl, with an electric egg beater. Yet they have a packed dance floor. So, it's what you play. Now don't get me wrong, I am a master mixer, but it's what I mix that is more important. If I make perfect mixes all night, but the crowd don't like what I'm mixing, it's a dead party. One thing I have learned is, not to be so proud. If the crowd is not responding, go and ask if they have any request. I still do that now. I still show up and see what the other DJs are playing in the clubs I play at.

Don't sweat this one hiccup. I've been doing this since 1977 and I still hiccup every so often. Learn to read your crowd because Saturday night will b e different from Friday night. What works at one wedding/party can bomb at the next. Start each night slow with a mix of music and watch how the people sitting down are responding. You already have the people on the dance floor so watch your non-dancers. When the head bobs and the foot taps...you are finding the crowds vibe. Play to the vibe of the night! A DJ that plays only what he/she likes has great personal standards and no money in thier pockets!

tracklist looks good. Also consider some old school favorites that people usually know all the words to. Depending on the crowd, some of these get an awesome reaction:
1. Notorious BIG - Juicy
2. Slick Rick - La Di Da Di & Children's Story (try to stay away form the cliche mix into Return of the mack, lol)
3. Biz Markie - Just a friend
4. Onyx - Slam (this one REALLY depends on the crowd)
5. Naughty by Nature - OPP
6. Enur feat. Natasja & MIMS - Calabria 2007 (Never got a bad reaction to this one)
7. Daddy Yankee - Gasolina
These are just a few... but I've never really gotten the stinkface from anyone for playing these.

I myself has had this happen too. What I notice sometimes is that we as dj's got music before most so sometimes the music is just to new. There's been nights when I just got a bunch of new that was good and all the crowd wanted to hear was the old stuff.........it wasn't until a month or 2 later that I was able to play that music, go figure. Another thing I noticed or have learned over the years is that people don't wanna hear remixes or mash-UPS. They want the original version so they can sing along while dancing. And scratchin, only a hand full of people really care if you can (most of the time its another dj), yeah they'll deal with it for about 10mins or so then its back to the original version.
Djing can be confusing sometimes, or should I say the people can be confusing........

What beatbreaker said about exclusives is so true. It's funny when you get dogged for playing something new, then 3 weeks later it's a top request.

thats why I always suggest the itunes list you can't go wrong there when it comes to top 40, however looking at this weeks list I get a stomach ache.

not that these hillbillies around here would appreciate a good remix.

Question: Are you bringing in your own computer and music library? Or is this something that they have provided for you?

So true and I am realizing this at my club right now (well last week when I played). Probably on par to play the same set when I get back on the 30th.. Either way, when things go bad I have to crutches at the club.
1. 90s hip hop - Never under estimate it. They may not dance to it, but when you have lost them, this usually gets the head bobs and singing with the songs
2. MEGA HITS ONLY, stuff that would have to be dead not to know. Then sprinkle the new stuff in on a packed floor.
Also, I notice that 105 to 115 BPM is the right speed to get the party started. Any slower and they are reluctant to get out there (unless there is a stripper pole). 120 and above is too chalenging to be the first one out there. This is a rule of thumb where I play at least.
I will say the when I last played, they got going at 125 BPM. Guess I had to wake them up that night after the Uconn basketball game (I live in CT and they are huge here, plus fianls). Had some guy come up just to tell me the score of the game (no request at all) and many poured in late after the game that night.
