Alright, so this is for any of the vets out there. I'm trying to get into the mobile DJ business. I started using VDJ home, to make some mixes for my iPod, then got a Mixtrack Pro, and have moved up to doing parties for friends. My problem is I don't have speakers or lights. I've got about 15 books on my kindle about how work in the DJ business but the best advice is from the people who have lived it. I just got a new laptop with a nice i5 processor and now I have the basic equipment. Should I look at buying the speakers first, or work on my abilities and get some lights? One of the biggest complaints I read about is how the market is flooded with 'kids' who don't know what they're doing and I want to avoid being labeled as an amateur but it is getting to be the summer time and I might be able to catch some weddings this year for practice in a live venue.
Just looking for advice from you.

I applaud you for doing your homework, but you have some work ahead of you kid.
First off, let's not think about doing weddings right now, unless you go with an experience DJ to a few of his wedding gigs to watch and learn. You don't want your career to crash and burn before it even really starts, so doing a wedding for now is off limits. For there is a lot more than just playing music at a wedding!
Here is something, most people won't tell you, but learn the history of the DeeJay. It'll give you a better appreciation of what it was yesteryear and what it has become today!
The next thing you want to do is get in the lab and practice everyday a minimum 2 hours a day with the equipment you already have for now. To this day, I still put in 15 hours minimum of practice and that doesn't include gigs.
Now depending on your budget, yes you want to get a decent pair speakers and a power amp for starters, you can get it all for about $500, if that's in your budget. Remember your purchase is not a want, but a need as in an investment!
Last thing I will tell you and I'll let the rest of the vets share some wisdom. You don't want to be one of those kids that flooding the market, don't lowball your price to get a gig, us veterans HATE that with a passion!
Best Wishes up and comer,
DJ Coach K aka THE MIX MONSTER
