Hi, I'm new and have downloaded the free Virtual DJ app.
I have playlists in iTunes and I want to mix them within Virtual DJ so that I can reduce the length of time of the playlist and then resave back to iTunes.
I've had a little play around but can't work out how to do it.
Any tips?
Many thanks

You can't edit iTunes playlists from within VDJ. You'll have to go into iTunes and edit your playlists, then in VDJ right click on the iTunes root folder in the browser and select 'reload' for the changes to take effect.

Ok. Can I create a playlist in VDJ instead? If so, what I'd then like to do is fit say 2 hours of music into a 80 minute disc. If that's possible, do I have to record and mix "live" or can it be done by just recording a mix between each track?
Thanks
Thanks

You will have to trim 40 min. off the tracks manually in your mix to get that right to fit into a 80 min. CD...
Practice a dry run where to trim on each track and do the math, set cue points and go for it...
Good Luck...

Does this mean that I have to do it "live" for 80 mins - ie play each track and mix it in real time?
What are cue points and can they be predetermined (is pre set)?
Am a new user so don't yet fully understand the functionality.
Thank you.

Hi
Yes that's right, vdj is a DJ performance app so it'd be easiest to perform with it and record your performance. It might be just possible to use the auto playlist and set the mix in and mix out points for each song. Within the "Adjust BPM" window you can set mix in and mix out points and which "types" of mix you're going to allow (beat mix, cut, fade, etc.).
So that means you can adjust the mix in and out points for each song and let the list mix automatically for you and record the result.
I think it'd be easier to use a program like mixmiester to make your mix since you just want to put some songs together to fit on a CD.

Thanks - really simple question but if I live record and mix it myself rather than via automix, how do I listen to the second track on the deck without it recording? (i.e. listen to the second track to find the right place on where to mix it).

you need a soundcard with dual outputs, so one goes to your speakers and one goes to your headphones, a 4.1 or higher surround card would do the trick, If you don't have that you could activate the pro trial and set up a mono output where one output is split in to, then get a single to dual converter so you can route the signals, if you want dual mono (stereo sound) get 2 more converters and split the signals again...
A good trick for mixing would be to wait for a section to start, count 16 beats or 32 beats (depending on the type of track) and press play on the other track, if you use smart play it will automatically sync and lock the beats together so you just need to slowly raise the volume or move the crossfader to introduce the next track, It takes a bit of practice to be able to do it naturally but that should start you in the right direction.

Have had some luck with automix and have managed to convert one playlist and now have some more queries:
1. Does VDJ retain the cue points for each track? ie when I reload a track from itunes will it remember where the cue points are?
2. Is it possible to let one track fade out and the next cut in from the start and/or let the first track cut and the next one fade in?
3. Is there a way to automatically set the length of the automix - eg place x number of songs in the playlist and set the automix for 3 minutes for each track?
4. Have been getting a bit confused in managing the playlists in the main browser and the right hand column. Presume I should save each playlist in VDJ but any other tips for easily managing the playlists?
Many thanks for your help

1. Yes, If you do it in VDJ
2. Yes, Remove (Intro/Outro) in AutoMix.
3. No/Yes
3A. You can populate the AutoMix playlist with the 80Minute of song plus some.
3B. Use Watchdog pluin with AutoMix.
http://www.virtualdj.com/addons/12817/WatchDog.html
WatchDog is a simple plug-in that currently will allow you to use automix with a predefined fixed time interval.
In other words you can now "force" automix to always mix to the next song after a fixed time interval. The time interval is configurable from 2 to 4 minutes.
In order to "enable" the plug-in just go to the "Others" effects tab and click on the "Timed Out Automix" button.
The next time you will activate automix, it will mix the songs with fixed time!
Good Luck,
Joey...

Thank you Joey.
Ref 2, I can't get a track to fade out and the next one start from the beginning, without the second track then running all the way to the end (i.e. cut at the end as well as the start). I'm using "smart" mix rather than the "fade" options (which is where the remove intro options seems to be), as that seems to give me more flexibility to cut the length of the tracks for a long playlist. However, there are some options for fade/cut/tempo in the "smart" mix option so I presume it is possible?
Thanks for the plug in advice. I currently have the free version of VDJ but believe that I might need to buy a version to allow me to then use plug ins. Is that correct and, if so, how much does it cost to buy?
Many thanks
