Topic: Friendly competition is good.

Our friends at serato have released a new software that seems to take aim squarely at Virtual DJ

Serato DJ Intro

http://serato.com/dj-intro

As a user of both serato and Virtual DJ, this seems to me like it is aimed at Virtual DJ's market. Virtual DJ in my opinion has had it's corner of the market pretty much to itself with the ability to use a multitude of different hardware.

Serato seems like it's positioning itself to change that.
DJ Intro is a closed software. Hardware is NOT mappable to it. You can't customize it and you can't use pluggins.

What serato claims is that "intro" controllers are native and work out the box (plug n play).

As I said, friendly competition is good. I don't know how "friendly" this competition is but I bet that both serato and Virtual DJ will continue to step the game up.

Yet another version.

Personally I'd scap itch and incorporate the features into scratch, but then who's bothered it's BPM time and it's all about the controllers! hopefully they've delivered, their 5 years to late but hopefully this time.

Its weak comapred to VDJ LE or even Traktor LE, heck even the Home Free version. Its stable but pretty weak. Pretty much mix 2 tracks and thats it, no recording, no auto loops, have to use the mouse to launch samples, its leaves alot to be desired.

Really the only thing it has going for it is the Serato name, in my opinion......... If thats supposed to make me want to spend 1000 bucks on an Itch controller they should think again........

I will say what little effects there is they are dam good.......wish ours were that good.

My 2cents

Serato have less feature than virtual dj but it just works without configuration. Not everyone wants extra features but just rock solid performance when they mix. Most djs just loop and play samples.

Ok ill give that but you can't even fire off samples from the controller and the loops have to be manually set.......

Huey

It has auto looping. The Sampler is using Z X C V B N to trigger them from your laptop.

I *hate*using the keyboard for anything other than searching personally.

There are no auto loops. Samples cant be triggered by anything except the mouse pointer. There are no keyboard shortcuts for loops or samples only the basics, thats it.

Huey

For the looping part, If you look at the software manual, It says Auto loop. For the key board shorts cuts, I know that in Itch software, You can trigger the 1 thru 5 cue points thru your keyboard even though a VCI 300 has only 3 cue points. I dont see why this new version wouldnt allow you to do the same as itch.

I understand what your saying but if you click on the "?" mark and hover over things it shows you that there are no short cuts. If you stay over the "?" mark it shows all the shortcuts. You'll see there's no loops or samples. There's no smart crates unless you build them in SSL or Itch, then they'll show up in Intro.

Like I said before the only thing going for that software is the "Serato" name.......

Oh snap.

Huey,

I would have 2 disagree with you, I think the search feature is better than VDJ's & the response on my mixtrack pro jog wheels is instantaneous & the scratching sounds "more vinyl" imo. I'm organizing a few crates now 2 see how that goes....I mean I'm still gonna use my VDJ I'm using it now 2 make a show disk for someone because can't record with intro....but I can't complain about Intro yet....gonna use it on a gig 2 see how that goes & then maybe that will determine the route that I go with my next purchase....

The search is not better, not by a long shot. The smart crates are no where as advanced as VDJ and as far as jog response I'm gonna assume you haven't done the registry tool tweak. I guess I'm just spoiled, its gonna take more then the Serato name to convert me. Don't get wrong its not all bad and yeah I know its the first release but dam, it doesn't even have auto loops!!

To each their own........
Huey

Huey,

U r correct I have not done any type of tweaks like that but I'm on MacOSX so if u point me 2 where I need 2 be I will try it.....I am not gonna stop using VDJ because I use it 2 record show disks for ppl plus I do Karoke so I will always need VDJ

Huey,

I just did the registry thing & the scratches do sound better & the jog wheels on my mixtrack pro are tighter on screen so thx for that.....

rd423,

Hey just wondering what setting worked for you with the Mixtrack Pro..(925, or 1024)..

Thanks.

Yea imo the Scratching in this new Serato Dj is more responsive then VDJ7.
But VDJ wins this round because of all the personalized configuring you can do to fit your style.
