Let's say I am looking for all songs that are "1990s" "pop"

I have "Pop" for the Genre, and "1990s" under the Comment section.

When I type "pop," my first EXTENSIVE list shows up. Now I want to narrow it to 1990's.

I've tried various ways. Nothing works. Am I missing something?

Click on file info's, in the year box but 90 that will pull everything up for that decade in any future search.

You can batch edit this field, simply go to top of files you want to edit, click on the first file, hold the shift key go to the last song in group and click on that, you should now have a batch of songs highlighted usually blue, right click on anyone and select file info's, go to the year box and type in 90, select apply to all then click on ok, all selected files should now be showing 90 in the year box.

Now when you make a search with 90 it will show all the files you have tagged in the browser.

You can then click on genre it will then place all those files in blocks of fields from that decade ie:...

rock
rnb
pop
party
disco
club

Or, do the same for comment field, except this time use the genre before the date ie: pop/1990s.

Why would you want to use the comment field for placing the year baffles me.

You don't need to change any tag information.

Instead, you should use filter folders.

You can create a filter folder that lists all rock songs from the 90s, or all songs from 1995 by one artist, and so on.

The sky's the limit! You can get really quite complex/specific with the filters.

Thanks to both of you.

I put "1990s" under comment, because I figured the "Year" selection should be an absolute year, i.e., 1993--not a generalized term of 1990s which encompasses 1990-1999.

Try this filter:

year>=1990 and year <2000 and genre is "pop"

This will narrow your results to all 90s pop songs providing the Genre and Year are tagged properly.

Something to consider for future versions:

It would be useful if simple search filters could be entered straight into the search box, instead of needing to create a filter folder.

Sometimes you just need to do a 'two stage' search like that once, so making a filter folder is overkill.

Kind of a "search for this, then search for that" command, if you understand.

I understand completely, but this is not the Wishes & New Features Forum. I am simply trying to assist the OP with a filter that will work for the current version of the software.

Yes I realise that. i wasn't trying to denigrate your post, just putting my thoughts into words.

A post starting with "Something to consider for future versions:" definitely looks like a plea to the development team to me. If you would like your thoughts to be considered for future versions then they do need to go into that forum. Personally, I like your idea on a dual-stage search function, believe it can be elaborated on, and would really like to see it go into the wishes forum.

Let's try and keep things on topic as this is how threads begin to get hi-jacked and out of control. The next guy might just jump in and say "speaking of the search function..." - all of a sudden we've gotten completely off topic and the poor OP gets no answers while the rest of the forum debates a separate topic.
