Hi, I was talking to somebody about DJ'ing and they told me there's nothing in it. The thing is, this had made me feel like **** now. =(

What do you mean by that?

It's true.........well kinda, lol!!
For me I don't do it for the money, yes the money is a plus but if we don't make anything at our shows I'm fine with it. It's the peoples complements that get me going. It's about the dude that just got dumped but by the end of the night he's getting laid cause we set the mood with our music. Making money off djing is a HUGE undertaking!! You give up a lot to do this, you spend weekends with strangers and not your family. Same goes for holidays. Your always working, be it downloading new music, setting up jobs, meeting with potential clients, etc etc.
Sit back think about what you wanna do, where you wanna go with djing. Once you decide never give up and work hard. It all lies in your hands.

Nothing more true said, but you need the drive, determination and comittment to make it happen. You can make good money as a DJ but only if you are willing to learn and put the effort in.
People will always try to put other people down and be negitive, you need to rise above that.
Good luck!

not sure what you mean by saying there is nothing in it, there is a hell of a lot of good times to be had, there is an amazing feeling when you are in sync with the crowd and they with you, and you get to take them places, It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, I call that a moment to remember, There are the people you will meet doing what you love, there is the benifit of getting payed for doing what you love, there is lot of drugs and alcohol, (try to everything in moderation and don't mess yourself up).
If he means that there is no money in it, he is probably right, if you spent the time practicing being a dj on business or study you coud probably be a CEO, but who want's to be a ceo, do what you love, if in ten years you don't feel the same do something else, its your life, don't take opinions as the truth, make up your own mind and you will be fine.

If he's talking about the money then he's probably right but don't get me wrong you can make lot's of money from it but it's all up to you how well you market your skills and stand out from the crowd since there seems to be a Billion DJs nowadays. I was actually just talking to my wife about that this weekend when we went shopping at the mall, everywhere we turned there was a DJ @ Guess store, DJ @ Abercrombie, DJ @ Verizon cell phone store!! I told my wife it wouldn't surprise me if the next time we walked into a McDonald's we see a DJ LOL
just like anything else in life....you will only go as far as you you drive yourself.

Thank you for all your words. Yeah it put me in a bad mood, but I wouldn't of let it bother me for long, I don't think he meant it negatively but still, I just literally thought about it for 10min after and just fell to sleep and I've only just woke up, and looked at what you've all written. Will you look at my live video I made and give your feedback on it please? Thank you.=)

FOR MY DJ FAMILY
If you ask yourself why DJ's charge so much for performances. We don't get paid vacation, we don't get paid sick days, we don't get bonuses for outstanding performances nor for Christmas. We don't have insurance plans nor do we qualify for unemployment. We sacrifice our family on special days so that we can bring happiness to others. Illness or personal affairs are not excuses for a bad performance. Next time you ask, remember that DJ's are DJ's because of the love of music, but that love doesn't pay debts. Happy DJ Day!! Re-post if you're a real DJ.

DJing now is over saturated, try to spend as little as possible and do it as a hobby in place of fishing or something. But at the same time don't buy total junk that doesn't work properly.
It's not all about money but the fact is that you need to earn, for example I have a van, I wouldn't have a van if I wasn't a DJ, the van was plus VAT due to it been a commercial vehicle, there are many other examples, you soon end up having to work to pay for it and drawing a wage from whats left over and at todays prices isnt a lot.
Also if you keep your equipment at home you have to make you decision around choosing a home around your equipment, i.e. a 1 bed flat on the second floor isn't the best idea etc.
You put yourself out like this and the money is pretty much the same as the guy with the office job that can drive anything and live anywhere.
You have to make it work for you and if you cant I would look to do something else but dont spend a lifetime struggling.

Couple things:
Your music selection in your video is so specialized that you may run into issues finding the right crowd. At least here in the States, most public places like bars and clubs would have a hard time with that type of music. On the upside, I tried to listen for your transitions and I couldn't hear them. However, the entire 15 minutes sounded more like random noise than structured music to me.
Secondly, You were using timecode for the entire 15 minute video yet you have not registered a pro license. That leads me to believe that you are using a cracked version of the software so as to avoid the 10 minute time limit on advanced sound configuration and timecode control. If you are willing to steal your software, have you paid for your music? How are those of us who have paid for a pro license as well as $10,000+ worth of music supposed to respond to that? Why is it ok for one person to have ZERO OVERHEAD, while someone playing by the rules invests 5 figures to get to the same place?
So my personal opinion in regards to the title of this thread? Why be concerned if there is nothing in DJ'ing when you've put nothing into it?
I hope to see you as a licensed pro user soon...

There is alot going on in Dj iing. You can travel around the world, DJ in big events and get paid well depending on how good you are. Ciroc, Hennessey, Bacardi, grey goose and other big names sponsor great djs. Every year, I cover the press for the Latin Mix conference and many Djs from the US & Some parts of the world get recognized for their talent. They have tons of nominations like best Club Dj. Best East coast, West Coast, Mide west, North & South. Best mixed CD, Best Cd Collaboration with other Djs. Best promoter. Up and coming DJ, etc. The reason why all this being done is because My friend pills. He created this event in rememberenace of DJ threat which passed away many years ago. Its now in its 6th annual and every year its getting bigger and bigger. Its a red Carpet award show for Djs.

djnutz - It's a new form of genre what's come out, kinda similar to Dubstep. I don't think it's that genre which should be left in the transition too long. Like many times before, no I don't own the software or the music, I'm just a shit DJ who sits at home not affording proper equipment because I'm not doing it for real yet.

I'm concerned because I made the video before people started criticizing what I wanted to do. It's hard to be positive when all I'm hearing is criticism and opinions in my ear lately.

Keep this in mind: The peers you should listen to are the ones who give you honest feedback. If you were the worst dj on the planet and everyone told you how good you were just so they didn't hurt your feelings, how would you know what areas needed improvement? I've been at this for over 20 years and I STILL learn something new almost every gig. Remember patience young Jedi. Mistakes have to be made in order to learn why something doesn't work. Ultimately, you will get out of this what you put in. I put in money to buy equipment and music and I get a return on that investment by charging appropriate prices. I put in a passion for providing a FUN atmosphere and I get goosebumps when the crowd roars becuse they love the song I'm playing.
I had to make A LOT of mistakes to get to where I am now. I had guys telling me I would get burned out and that I wouldn't make any money. Well, I am a full time dj. I have been going strong since that first show in 1989. Do yourself a favor and try to find a local DJ willing to take you under his wing. Sure beatmixing is a good skill to work on, but it is just a small piece of the whole picture...

I was having a good laugh over this yesterday, after seeing the word Moombahton in your video and thinking "WTH is Moombahton?"...
Apparently it was "invented" by some bloke who played a remix of a track called Moombah, but pitched it down.
What?!
It's not a "new genre" because you played it slower!
A few months ago I was trying to convince someone on YouTube that the songs he was posting were not "remixes" just because he'd sped them up. I think I finally managed to get through to him after several lengthy explanations!
Funny stuff. :-)

Nice info, but I played it 5% faster! They're actually edits too.
geposted Thu 01 Dec 11 @ 10:52 am
I think I'll play some Bob Marley at +10% and invent Marleyton.
Then if anyone plays Bob Marley sped up, the have to give me royalties because I invented it.
LOL

Ha ha, funny guy. -_-
It was soooo mixed regardless of what any of you lot say. -_-

I quite like some of the Moombahton releases/remixes, I don't like the heavy electro/noise side of it which lends itself more to dubstep.
Just where it'll go I don't know but the BPM range is definitely appealing, I don't like the culture of creating a new genre every week but it's good when someone comes along and demonstrates there are no rules.

Yeah me too Bagpuss.
I do think some of the producer/editors are trying to make it into Dubstep, rather than letting it be it's own genre to be honest. It's nice to see that you have the Vesta VCI-100 MIDI, I have that too, I think they're good, the pitch sliders aren't amazing though + could of done with more loop buttons. =D
