I have recently downloaded some songs that scan in VDJ as 128kps, however Windows shows them at the correct bitrate which ties in with the filesize.
Of the 40 or so files about 10 are incorrectly read with VDJ. Any ideas?

If they scan as 128kbps in VDJ chances are they've been encoded using VBR.

How do I know if an MP3 is VBR or not?
Well Winamp will display the bitrate live, so with VBR files, you'll see it change as the track plays.
I'd suggest putting Winamp on your system, as it is useful to have.
Also, tagging software such as Tag & Rename will display 'VBR' next to the bitrate if/when the file is VBR.
