Topic: Advice for a beginning DJ

Dieses Thema ist veraltet und kann veraltete oder falsche Informationen enthalten.

The following paragraph is straight from the introductory comments about me (being new to the site), so this says it all right here, thus far!

My name is Wayne (DJ name still to be determined!). I'm a long time fan of hip hop music (I like R&B also) and due to me having a VERY large collection of music (largely CDs), I want to do an immediate thing, and that's utilize my collection to the fullest extent by becoming a creative, respected DJ, fully showing my love of hip hop specifically and music in general. I'm a 100% percent newcomer to the DJ "business" and I'm ready, willing, and able to learn whatever it takes to succeed, and I hope to gain ALL of the knowledge I can along the way!!!!!

Welcome Wayne

I am sure you will get great advice and assistance from the brother/sisterhood here. Just be specific on querstions and respectful and in no time yoou;ll be up and running. I have been in the business over 30 years ...... almost time for my nurse and sponge bath .... and still learning came from the 2 turntables and lugging CRATES of records to now 100% digital andmy fellow djs here have been a great resource

Thanks for that first response. One of my first questions would be does it matter what kind of laptop I get to organize my music? It's been told to me that a Macbook Pro would be my best bet.

When it comes to equipment, it only has to work. Every time. And you must be comfortable using it, fixing it when problems arise, and maintaining it to keep it working on a regular basis. I wrote this a while ago, read every word. It WILL help.

ive been using an HP laptop for about 3 years, this thing is on almost 24hrs a day... its been great for me.

In this business laptop replacement every 2 years is very common as software upgrades end up maxing out your current system.
Macs are great but expensive compared to PCs, I'd rather buy a PC since its easier to upgrade yourself.

read this page for system requirements http://www.virtualdj.com/products/virtualdj/index.html

Personally, I like to buy something that I can upgrade later on. Something with upgradeable RAM is great.

I have been on a Compaq CQ56 --- and seriously thought would have an issue but VERY happy with it not a problem in almost a year ... unless the wife sets the system up ... but hey shes learning.

Best thing is itsa RAM is upgradable YAHOO

@ Wdm625. Where in the States are you from ? I am from NYC. Macs are good and you dont have to make any tweaks while windows based laptops, you do. You have to remove alot of the excess junk software and make tweaks to get it optimized.

Another thing to consider wdm625 is the overall cost of starting from scratch. If you're going to be mixing hip hop, a controller is almost a must have. Trying to mix with just a mouse isn't going to cut it. LOL . Along with that you're going to always find more odds & ends that you'll end up buying. I've done great with using my Dells at home and gigs. One thing to pay attention is specs for video if you plan to use them in the future. Hope that helps some.

@djnutz. That how to dj post was very informative and a good read also.

@djrasza. It's interesting you mentioned HP, because recently I've been looking into getting an HP laptop, and chances are this is the brand that I'm going to go with.

@caliente123. I'm from Petersburg, VA.

@djnrgbear. I do plan to mix hip hop (along with some R&B) and I already know that mixing with the mouse "isn't going to cut it", lol. I'm also looking at what type of equipment I'm going to purchase. I like a lot of the Numark sets.

HP has been good to me. (not great because ive had two incidents with the last 2 ive onwed 1- WIFI antena died but they replaced it free of charge even though it was out of warranty but a common issue with that model, 2 thermal shutdowns, NEVER use laptops with cloth underneath them as they suck in all that lint and obstruct the vents).

As i mentioned before, the price and specs are great considering that your music software will outgrow them in about 2-3 years...
My next one will most likely be an HP for the simple reasons ive mentioned...

Wish you all the best in your new venture, be patient, we all had to be :)
