I had been using VDJ for a good number of years and it was my way into digital DJing from using Vinyl and CD's. The reason for using VDJ was really due to being friends with Scott (SBDJ) and seeing it in use with him.
I have however just gone over to the dark side and started using Traktor Pro 2, the reason for this is simply that I was looking for a new controller and the offer thats available at the moment for the Kontrol S2 was difficult to ignore.
Early days but to be honest have not seen any significant differences in using both peices of software. I dont do video, just MP3's...

Same reasons AsTheDj had for switching to VDJ, all in one software with no expensive addons to do what i want to do. Video mixing is great and Customer service and tech support are very knowledgeable. i like being able to use timecode or just plug in a controller if i want. Great Program!

Video
Actually, I hated the skins available and my dac 2 didn't work like it did with pcdj but i needed video and karaoke so i switched anyway.

I like the open Soundcard Routing, Skins, Video & Mapping Capabilities in which you can map according to your own preference. Above all it works on any controller that you can find on earth.

i think virtual dj is very user friendly, also i like the assist of the overlapping of two or more wave length, makes mixing a lot easier for beginners.

Recommended by a friend in 2008 who had been using VDJ for some time (well, the only one as everyone else is either using Traktor or Serato)
Alcatech BPM Studio was expensive, very far behind and only worked with their proprietary controllers which kept failing.
I bought a DN-HC4500, licensed copy of VDJ after a couple of days with the demo and was blown away by the JPBoggis Denon mapper. As they say, the rest is history!

personally, i like vdj because its the first dj software i ever used and felt then that it was the one for me. so i stuck with it. ive tried other software, but only to be let down on varied aspects. vdj is the one i choose... and im married now for life...

Started out with Serato and had too many issues with it. Constant crashes (since I was using it on a PC and not a MAC) forced me into something else more stable. Turned to Abelton and used that for a really long time. Got to the point where I mastered Abelton and know it like the back of my hand, but wanted something a little simpler. Got involved with VDJ, and never looked back to anything else...even though I still mess with the other 2 software packages once in awhile.

Just the regular "Trial and error"-route. I've tried Traktor, Mixmeister, PCDJ, and in the end BPM Studio (which, by the way:
did work with a Hercules budget controller (MP3?))
VDJ just happens to be the most flexible and supported anything I needed at that time. Just recently starting with video without any difficulties.
I just wonder why I started at the wrong end of the line....

First I went to PCDJ because it was the first PC based DJ program I saw. It worked just fine, but my friend Steve Lynch who initially was a big PCDJ fan said Virtual was the way to go. Steve is just a super smart person and I appreciate his recommendation! GO VIRTUAL!

I am going to be completely honest here....I started using VDJ 7.0 so that I can do a friend of mine who is a rapper show live....I had a cracked version using my mbox 2 to route the sound out of....used it for about 4 shows & saw how much I liked it & I wanted to dj full parties for the extra money so I bought the mixtrack pro & deleted the crack version & was using LE...was practicing with my mixtrack pro for about 3 days & decided to buy the pro version....I have seriously thought about switching 2 Serato but I like to think that I have got something started here because after the dj's in my area have seen me on VDJ they are all switching to it except for 3 of them that have been dj'ing for many many years...Another reason I haven't switched is because I do karaoke & I'm thinking about starting to do videos...I'm also thinking about being a premium member so I can start using netsearch....

Just an update on this, have now found a VDJ mapper for the S2, so Traktor or VDJ? Decisions, decisions :D

Plays video without having to pay for additional plugin
Plays time codes and supports 99% of MIDI capable DJ hardware out there.
Bunch of other stuff, but those are mainly personal preferences.

I started out using PCDJ Red Mobile, I was slowly putting my music selection on the laptop, then Ext HD, making the transition. I used that for about a year and a half, started seeing the evolution of things (so to speak); Went to a party for a friend and checked the dude using a controller with I think Serato program, and was like.... hmmmmm. Started checking around a little looking at different controllers. Not knowing much about them I went cheap and bought a used Numark Stealth, mainly because I got it for only $100, I figured if it doesn't suit me, I haven't put out that much. Anyhoo, I had tried tree versions of a number of different DJ softwares including Virtual DJ ver 5, at the time I had no controller, but I remembered the program. For whatever reason I really didn't gravitate to the Traktor software that came with the Stealth, kept playing around with the free VDJ for the little 10 minutes it gives you. Then decided to try the full version.
Simply put, I felt more comfortable with it. Which I think is the number one characteristic for anyone trying to decide what software or hardware to use. I'll probably upgrade from the Stealth Controller at some point, but I also believe I need to become proficient with what I have, explore all that I can do with the current set up. Because at this point for what I do, mainly wedding receptions, dinner parties, private dances, what I have now will work. Eventually I'll get into karaoke at some point, and it's nice to have a program that is flexible enough to handle the three venues without having to purchase add-ons.
So there's my two cents.
