I remember waaaaaay back in the days, VDJ supported DMX lights.
I never used it because I never had any idea how to work with DMX lighting. (I still don't to be honest)
I have several led lights and lasers that are DMX and I figure if VDJ can control them or better yet if I can control them and program them through VDJ then the question becomes....
HOW???
But the first question is if VDJ still has this ability.

It did, but it doesn't now - not directly.
But what you can do is use the SBDJ plugin which works alongside Freestyler DMX software.

Do you still have to have a DMX controller with this plugin?

There's already a threat going on about DMX. I've basically explained there how DMX works. Please have a look: http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/163213/General_Discussion/fogger_remote_DMX_addressable____questions__.html

Not a controller - you need a dongle.
i.e. a USB to DMX convertor. This can be as simple as a cable, with USB on one end and XLR on the other (electronics are inside the XLR) or it can be a box with a PCB inside, a USB input and XLR in/out sockets.
Some dongles only work with certain software (dongle and s/w are tied) but others are more open standard.

the best dongle to get is the enttec pro for a lightshow requiring multiple universes, but the enttec open is good enough if you are only running a few lights, although it uses more cpu so should be a consideration when deciding on the best for your needs.

how come atomix done away wih the DMX feature??

The DMX seems to still exist - there are VDJScript verbs for it. In the past VDJs DMX only worked with Sunlite units but it's never really been used in VDJ to be honest.

Read this old thread http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/86045/General_Discussion/DMX_512_control_VDJ_
After further digging it looks like it was introduced in VDJ v3.2 (2005)

Hi. Will VDJ be able to control DMX lighting per song? Meaning can I record the lighting sequence for the songs I repeat often (Cupid Shuffle, Macarena, etc) and the lighting will go through that recorded sequence of lights every time the songs plays automatically?
Thanks Everyone

yes, the light sequences can be controlled by cues you place in the track.. you have 99 cues, so essentially you could have 4 cues for the audio and 95 cues for 95 different lighting scenes, although I'm not sure freestyler supports that many...
you can also control freestyler with midi through vdj if you wanted a black out/white out/strobe trigger. Check out scott's thread in the plugin forum for more info.

Where is a good place to start with the whole DMX thing? I have several DMX lights, but no DMX system. I want specifically to do what I mentioned in my previous post: set cues per song.
Thanks

just pick up an enttec open usb to dmx dongle. Download freestyler and read through the manual to set up your lights.

Ok, so I would need an enttec open or open pro, AND a enttec open usb to dmx dongle?
Also I don't know squat about DMX addressing. Is there a resource to get started there?
Thank so much!

they are the same thing... google, wikipedia, freestyler forum, light instruction manual.

There was a plug in being developed that fit into VDJ, for DMX. I actually saw it at one of the conventions. Don't remember the name, or what became of it.
