so im finaly moving out of the bedroom and going mobile... once i get my kit there i have only two hours to get set up and test everything because the owners of the venue wont open any earlier.

kit im taking

laptops x 3 one for me, one for lights and one as a back up.
mixtrack pro
amp
speakers
fogger
booth
lights

is there any tips on getting unloaded and setup.

also any tips on doing both lighting and djaying on my own?? got a guy to do the lights, but in all fairness hes about as much use as a chocolate fire guard. we practice for a few hours today and i spent 40 mins with a strobe effect in my left eye lol

Not really seem like you have it covered.

Actually, I forgot, get payment on arrival.

And when they ask you to announce the buffet, quickly help yourself first so you dont have to que :)

Now you know how I got my star!

Black extension cords, gaff tape or similar, AA batteries, take your time setting up, speaker height, cables tucked neatly, etc.... oh yeah, one more thing... expect the unexpected!!!
Good luck~

Get a good mobile DJ cart - Rock 'n Roller R10 or R12, for example. Expensive, but SO very worth the money.

Lock your vehicle between every trip, unless you are like 10' away from it. :)

Don't blast the fogger too much... it can set off the fire alarm... firemen like to party, but they don't usually like to be invited that way. :)

@ charlie, im supplying the buffet, so ill plate myself up a few stacks before hand and leave them in my booth :D

@ Ecoast, i got some black and yelloe electrical tape, the 100m wide stuff to tape my cables down and a roll of black duck tape also. not sure why i would need AA batteries though lol i dont tend to dj with a sony walkman :D hhehe

@ drew, cant really arrofd a rollbox atm so its just a matter of load and unload of individual items. ive got a driver who will remain with the van at all ties while me and my roady lug tha gear upstars :(

Yourself, a roadie and a driver? It won't take anywhere near two hours to set up!

With that amount of kit, you should be able to set up in under an hour.

Tip number one: Before you leave home, check that you've got everything.

Mentally walk through all the kit you'll use, and the cables required to set it up, then make sure you've got the items with you.

Take spares of everything you possibly can.

Forgetting something or having something essential die on you are the things you need to consider.

May i recommend that you take a little fan or something because you can get frikken hot while performing.

why don't you do a trial run at home and break down , pack and then

set it back up ?? also make a checklist so you don't forget anything

everything on your checklist should have a backup ( as time goes on you will be able to

afford to purchase backups for everything if you can't now) whether it's a laptop , a power cord

a roll of duct tape or breath mints ...... if you are going live with a lot of new stuff , it's only right

to the customer that you iron out any wrinkles on your time , not there's ........right ?? plus

you will have confidence in yourself and your "kit"

i'm impressed that you are using purpose dedicated lap tops like that

i would say "good luck" except i believe we make our luck, so i hope you are a success

and make your own good luck by being highly prepared.....

thanks chuck, ive tore down my rig and set it up at home on numerous occasions but never in a venue so ive been sure to pack extra long extension lieads and enoguh to cover my socket usage and then some..got backups for midi controller, laptops, cables, headphones, dont got no bereath mints yet but i do have deoderant and afrershave packed lol

i felt it would be better to use purpose dedicated laptops to save on any issues that may arise from trying to run too much at once from one laptop, untill i get more farmiliar with the freestyler software and plugins for vdj, then ill stick to seperate systems.

how do you guys usually take requests and how do you go about the play order of said requests???

@spaz, yeah good idea... i ave the perfect thing... my laptop cooler :D

AA's for wireless mic if thats what your using & take more black extension cords than you think you'll need. I take a variety of lengths to every new place.
Good luck & post some pics for us!

oh.. erm no i dont have a wireless mic yet, just a wired one.

Lol, nice. C:

For requests, take a separate notepad, and have people write their requests. Otherwise you'll have people yelling at your ear and trying to sing to you. This also helps people see if the song they're going to request has already been requested.

DON'T FORGET YOUR HEADPHONES!

Take plenty of water bottles. DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL

Install sound first, then lights. If you're running out of time setting up, at least the music will be running.

Have a 10 minute song (some cool mix or something) so that in that case you really have to urinate.

got headphones, dont drink when i work, and i got team viewer just in case i gotta pee :)

Lol control your laptops from the loo with your phone?? Thats hitech!

@Blulite

Great to see you going outside, just to add a few to the great tips..

- Take a roll of cable velcro to tidy up your workplace last minute, way nicer than tape
- Be mindful of people trying to get behind your gear, there is always this one rude drunk guy (or girl)
- In contrary to earlier tip, id say, if possible, socially accepted and liked by yourself, once everything if fully going, all is going well, reward yourself with a cold beer to the end of the party. Mixed with the victory of the first gig it will taste better than ever before :P

But.. the most important..

HAVE A BLAST!!

haha, so im at he gig all set up and running tests.... problems so far... one lamp out in my lighting rig... dont have a spare.. typical... and the fogger has set the fire alarm off lol.... other than that though... everythings going pretty well lmao....
