I DJ with my laptop and like to use hot keys a fair bit. I was wondering if it would be possible to get an external keyboard for my laptop and map it to do the same. This all well and good i plan to turn the keyboard into a midi fighter style midi device by removing the keys and replacing them with arcade buttons and a few potentiometers.
I know that this can be done with an old gaming controller http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DijIYqZHGPg but can it be done with a PC keyboard??

"External" or "internal" keyboards behave exactly the same way. So, yes you can plug a second USB keyboard on your laptop and map it to do whatever you want it to do.
One note: Both keyboards will do exactly the same thing. Mapping "A" on external keyboard with a function means that if you press "A" to the internal keyboard will do exactly the same thing.
PS: I can't see how you could possibly add potentiometers on a standard keyboard. Switches, yes. Potentiometers, NO.

You might be more interested about a gamepad, that will do the trick, provided you install midi yoke and rejoice to convert hid intro midi for virtualdj to interpret.
or if you have good knoledge vdjscript to create a hid definition for vdj.
Gamepad's have like, 4 pot's available and a few buttons.
About the keyboard mod, there is a way, i can't recall the program's name....

I see..
Well would it be possible to reprogram a QWERTY keyboard in order for it to send a different signal to my laptop? Like in the same was that the game controller is reconfigured. Any software that could do this?
Any help on this is great.

That vimidi doesn't say if you can use two keyboards or not............I'm gonna assume that if you map one it'll still effect the other which is still no good.

Had a go at trying to get one keyboard to work independently.. didn't work. So I've just gone for the classic game controller to midi. Got some buttons coming in the mail so I'll post a pic when i finish the build :)
Thanks again for the helping hand :)
