So last night I had a wedding of about 165 people. The hall I worked out is very, very nice and has a good reputation. Rooms are not very DJ friendly but you know this going in. THe room was recently remodeled. OUr table was sitting for us center room right off the dance floor. about 1 1/2 feet from the table on the floor was a single outlet. It made sense for me to plug into right, nope. Intros go good, music pounding. Dnner, nice and smooth. Start picking it up a little bit and my partner says the left speaker doesnt sound right. Now i just picked up a new pair of JBL PRX 615m's two weeks ago. I walk around the front and it sounds fine. I get on the mic to make an announcement and the mic cuts out (this never happens) and just as I look at the mic I loose sound and lights. Everything comes back on except for the 6000. first minute I was ok, second minute I was still good, by the third minute I was getting a bit tense because nothing made sense, then the 6000 flickered and shut down again. 6 minutes in I have the staff over my shoulders the video guy giving me light with his lamp, the DJ from the other room came over ( who i knew ) offered his 6000 to me, The captain of the room came over and says the bride is getting a bit antsy (understandable...i'm in cold sweats and freaking out) Soon enough the owner who was in the kitchen comes over takes a quick look around and says to me, no wonder - your plugged into the low voltage outlet for the lighting for the tables (I was the first DJ to ever set up on that side of the room) she apologizes that it wasn't marked or that no one told me about it. grrrrrr. she says use that outlet and points ( now I saw that outlet, but it ran across the room about ten feet into the newly remodeled section, I didnt want to use that for obvious reasons. grrrrrr. Switched some extension cords around and was up and running in 12 minutes. I honestly thought I fried the 6000, but forgot about the safety shut off.
I apologized to the groom after we started back up and told him the situation, he was kinda smug about it and then said "do you have a cartwheel in you, if you do that were cool" I said you got it and right before he and his mom did their dance together I did three perfect cartwheels across the floor, got a round of applause and moved on. I then apologized to both the Bride and her mom and they both said "shit happens". Needless to say I was frazzled for about an hour after. Both the staff and video guy said I was grace under pressure but I sure didnt feel like it
I had two backups with me but I was so into trying to figure out why everything else was on and not the 6000 that I didnt even remember they were there.
I added 15 min to the end of the party and they danced the rest of the night and that was it...

Geez!!!! Thats crazy!!! Good Job!!! I think you need to invest in a power conditioner with a voltage meter built in. That might have saved the day from the start.

A similar thing happened to me 2 months ago,set up my system and did sound checks. Grand entrance ok,dinner music ok,speechs ok. When it was time to start cranking out some tunes it seemed like my speakers were loosing volume and I had to adjust on mixer, next thing music cut out just by flipping on a wireless mic. I unplugged my main lights problem gone. Thankfully lasers were low draw and I could put something on dance floor for light. Found out later the previous 3 weeks in a row they had problems with 2 bands and 1 DJ. Also the hall had called the Bride the day before to warn her that she may have to choose between A/C or Lights.
Nice to find this out after the fact.
