i barely get chance to practice these days as im now a full time dad of three kids and dont have a gf to help out. soo i think it may be time to hang up my headphones and just keep something to play with. i barely get chance to take a dump these days.

what swung the descision for any of yiou guys when youve reached this point? and i know everyone has at some point.

Well, being a parent is more important, and the most rewarding endeaver you can undertake. You do have three, so you must love kids (unless they all came at once). Hang in there, do the best that you can do, and maybe you will get some help. Sell the equipment, and when you can get back in, you can buy updated equipment. I just sold my Technics this Tuesday, but most stuff does not hold any value.

my son will be two in July and my wife and I do all we can to support and raise him.
Sometimes, as a father I have to stop myself from being selfish. I've sold two set up's in the past 5 years so that I could make life easier for my wife and now my son. Sacrifice for the sake of your family, the dj gear is a thing, but family, that lasts forever.
You can always buy gear, but time with family is valuable and you can't buy that no matter how much money you have.

I... errr... quit back in the early 90's. Job got to hectic and I too was starting out with a family.

But then the family grew up, job changed (still hectic - but manageable) and I'm now back in the game.

I sold almost everything. Back then I had enough kit that I sold two complete setups and still had my Numark 1975PPD and 1210's left over - as well as all my vinyl.

That would have been the equivalent of keeping my laptop and controller these days. BTW - Still got them and the vinyl!

Keeping these means you can keep your hand in. I was called out of retirement for several gigs. Just hired what I needed for the night.

Also these days there are so many other options available to you. Internet Radio for example allows you to spin to an audience without leaving your home - and after the kids are in bed - you could even put your name down for Virtual DJ Radio!

Your skills never leave you. You'll always be able to spin, so never rule out a come back. There's no such thing as an "old" DJ - just an "experienced" one ;-)

Cheers,

Roy

just keep in mind that depreciation on Electronics is so high, that selling your stuff isnt even worth it..

unless you seriously need the space (and cant store it at friends or familys place) then that would be the only reason i would say to try and sell it all..

If you can store it and keep it.. Even if you dont use it professionally.. there will come a time when it will be nice to have
EG: family get together, charity event for a friend, cousin who gets married 'last minute' and cant afford a DJ, etc etc

i say keep it.. I dont know if you have a garage, but old DJ systems make super cool Garage radios ;-)

I totally agree with hippydog..

I have three kids and wife, and even if its a few minutes at a time you'll need something to wind down especially during stressful moments.

I did a similar thing, I sold the vast majority of my gear and bought a decent controller. For me it was the best choice. I did end up adding another CDJ1000mk3 to that after a while as it came up now and then (on the very rare occasion I had a mix with someone) that a CD player was needed. I'd also kept one vinyl deck.

But people are correct in their comments that the resale price is so low it's almost not worth it. But for mainly just having the odd play at home these days a controller was heaven, and selling my gear paid for the controller so it was like a swop really.
