I only own active speakers, and most have digital amps, which means that they are easy to setup, easy to daisy chain if needed, weigh very little and you don't need an external amp
But...
If I was less lazy, I would choose passive speakers and good amps. It seems like whenever I experience very good DJ/live sound, it's always done using passive speakers and amps - and more often than not they are 10+ years old.
This is of course just my opion
Regarding your second question, I look mainly at SPL if I want to know how powerfull an active speaker is. It's far from perfect, but much better than the provided watt limits
But that's just the power - you really need to listen to the speakers before choosing them
Best regards
Klaus Mogensen

You say 200 than say 1 this week and another next, does that mean 400? as in two lots of wages or 100 one week and another 100 the following.
It's just 200 isnt a lot even when I was starting out in 95, you would be better buying used of ebay.

£400 all together, its only my first set of speakers so im not going all out.
geposted Wed 31 Jul 13 @ 11:54 am
if you got passive you would need an amp as well on top of the 400 for the speakers.
srm450's are about 800 new, try find some used ones.

I was looking at buying 2 of these..

Bear in mind, they're only really in my bedroom + friends houses, are they okay?

What size of Gigs or Parties are you looking to play?
If you are doing Private house party stuff you might well find a small pair of Active speakers to do the job. Anything else could involve more serious money.
Another way of looking at this is to look for something that you could build on without having to replace the first speakers you get. The SRM450s that Charlie mentions are great value second hand but make sure you can see and hear the ones you buy to make sure that hey are working properly. Make sure you don't forget to budget for stands. They are an essential, not a nice to have :-) Again the second hand market could help you here. You might even find a pair which come with stands included. You can start with these and then add a powered Sub later once funds allow.
Powered units a great to start off with as they keep things simple and reduce the amount of gear you have to drag arround with you.

Posted at the same time mate lol.
For bedroom use you might find smaller is actually better. The Behringer gear can be ok value for money new and peanuts second hand. It can also have relyability issues tho so I would strongly suggest you go with a local dealer that you can return to rather than buying off the Net. Some of their gear seems to go on forever but I have heard of occasions where thair kit has failed on first power up :-( Can be a bit Luck of the draw.
Honestly I would buy a second hand Pair of 450s before choosing a New pair of Behringers.
A good quality pair of powered monitors might suit better for small room use rather than the larger PA Speaker type. In a small room the larger speakers may well not sound their best.
A genuine 200 Watts each should be more than fine for small house party use.

I agree with with Klaus. You get a better sound from the non digital amplifiers but you need to know a bit of what your doing as Active speakers have limiters to ensure that you don't blow them. and it is a little bit more effort to setup.
Active speakers tend to naturally force you use different breakers and spread the load reduce the chance of tripping a breaker.
I prefer to use small speakers ussually 12" for mids and highs and small sub.

Right okay, well i only have 'Mix Track Pro II' which only has Phono inputs, so at the moment i use Phono-jack splitter, can i use jack cables on the Behringers/450s?
Or do i need different cables?

Your best bet is to pick up a convertor that lets you take the Phono out from the Mixtrack using a short lead and feeds out a Balanced line signal on what are called XLR connectors (These are the same as the connectors used for microphones).
They are not too expensive and well worth the investment. Using Phono to 1/4\\\" Jack leads is an option but these can give you some problems with Hum and noise pick up. How big a problem this causes changes quite a bit depending on your setup. You could try them out with the Jacks first to see if they behave. But aim for the Convertor in the end it can save you hours of grief wondering where that annoying Hum or Buzzing is coming from. Something like this

Thanks for replying Daz, so let me get this straight.
Deck Output - Phono - 3.5m jack.
Then i have got a 2 x 1/4" to 3.5m Jack splitter at home (Below is the one i actually have)
http://www.rubadub.co.uk/klotz-y-cable-3-5mm-minijack-to-2-x-1-4-jack-3m-ay5-0300
Could i plug the two 1.4" jacks into both speakers then feed the 3.5m into the 3.5m splitter on my mixtrack?
Would that power both?
Sorry for all the questions i'm new to this haha.

One of us needs to slow down lol
Like I said tho you can use what you have to try out and see how it goes. There are cables available which have two Phono Plugs to Two 1/4" Jack plugs. You would be better to replace your current wire setup with at least this. The Small size Jack and splitter you have might work for now but will give you problems with bad quality connections quite quickly.
BTW The convertors ( Direct Inject Boxes to give you there correct name) That I have shown are Pro models so might be a little pricey (Only Pics I had to hand) There are smaller and less expensive units that do the same job.

Yes i know haha!
So i'd need a 2 x TRS to 2 x Phono Cable?
Basically, this?

For £400 I think you'd be better off with a pair of powered monitor speakers.
That much cash would buy you a pair of KRK Rokit RP8s, which would be way past adequate for home use.
They will sound much nicer than PA speakers because they have soft dome tweeters. PA speakers will sound harsh in comparison.
