Since i Like to build my folders are set up certain way itunes wants to organize the way it wants to...versus MM adapting to my file structure..with itunes if you move a file with in your file structure creates a dead link in itunes...versus MM where I can move files around as i wish with in the Player. Mostly its the Itunes handles my music database

I have a mac and my music folders are not in ITunes. I a Just click New folder and I create my own. I don't recommend using any software to organize your music. Actual folders is the Most secure way.

I organize my laptop on my desktop and mirror it to my laptop. So i organize my folders in media monkey, edit titles, retag whatever then sync it to my laptop. Virtual dj doesnt satisfy my needs in keeping my database. And i have a large database. plus i do video remixes and remixes for paties...so i need good database management...heres a little video mix

I was Watching the video and it was cool that you added a different beat but, The flow of the last beat with biggie matches more with her voice better than the first and second beat.

I organize the same way. Takes a bit of time but you are not reliant on a software that can possibly jack up your files. And I do back up monthly.
Folder are organized by decades with sub folders for Audio only and Video files. I let the software sort out the genres
Another folder for Ableton projects.

How long have I been raving about MediaMonkey....? ;-)
It's great. Complete control over file and folder names, great scripting engine and you can manage huge collections very quickly with their tinySQL database.
All we're missing is a plugin that would update the VDJ database when you add/move/rename/delete files from MediaMonkey.
Icing on the cake would be, filter and folder management in MM and the ability to use the VDJ scan engine to analyse the files.
Keeping both in check and ensuring your DB is up to date the next time you play.
Yes I know you can do it all in VDJ, but I find the browser interface clunky for music/tag management. The guys at MM know how to build a good UI for managing music. Atomix know how to build DJ software.
Experts in their own fields...
Cheers,
Rpy

+1 for MediaMonkey here too!
It blows away the competition for 2 main reasons:
1. It can correctly handle multiple genres per track. ITunes can't do this.
2. It can automatically monitor folders for changes, and update it's library accordingly. ITunes can't do this either.
This makes it ideal for maintaining a music library across multiple devices (Main desktop, laptop, external hard drive...).
It's only real drawback is that it is not natively compatible with Apple Macs. I have got around this using Parallels Desktop to run it in a virtual environment, but it has it's limitations (the biggest of which is that I can't drag and drop from MediaMonkey's playlist directly into Virtual DJ's playlist window, like I can on Windows).
Egads! Relying on folders alone and creating a 'system' rapidly becomes unmanageable once you start building a library of more than a few thousand songs. ITunes isn't perfect, but even *that* is better than just using folders.
How do you differentiate between songs based on rating? How would you play a mix of songs whose rating is higher than, say, 4 stars? How do you 'tag' tracks (e.g. 'Instrumental', 'Explicit Lyrics', etc...)?
Well organised folders are a good thing. Relying exclusively on folders without any form of media manager whatsoever is...hard work.
That's why I love MediaMonkey - it can do both.

I am still using my actual folders, but when im not djing and just going thru my music, or if i just bought an album every song isnt gonna be party music, I can add a grouping label such as (classichouse, JerseyClub) which with out moving it from that albums folder, which is in the HouseMusic parent folder, and automatically be added to jersey club autoplaylist. But my original file structure stays the same.

Its called "Knowing your music"......... What did you guys do before software?? I keep it simple and only use folders as well.

@ Djnanite. I have over 50 folders plus many Session folders and everything is done Manually. The reason why I prefer this way is because I know where my songs are at all times. Before I ad songs into my sessions, I hear the track and pick the best session folder where that song would fit best in. I don't go by rating. I just ad song into folder where the bpms are similar. I have Many Genres and in each genre, I can have a minimum of 5 session and others may have up to 10 sessions.

im not speaking on rating, im speaking on file structured the way i did my crates. i just didnt put them in the crate in alphabetical order. I put thrm according to Type. House went with house, hiphop wth hiphop, R&B withR&B, Classics went accordingly. So that how my folders are set up. And from the folders i have playlist that groups together the tracks that are party tracks, wedding tracks, even an easy listening music bed set....So before software i was lugging crates now im grabbing my laptop.
See im an old school dj that embraces technology.

If that's your attitude, why do you even use Virtual DJ in the first place? Why not just continue to DJ the same way everyone else did before software?

See all that work. I hit a playlist and thats where the knowing my music comes into play. ex. friday i have and 80s party coming up, and these people are black and grew up in new jersey...so theres about 3 playlist ill be bringing up. so for example i click on my Baltimore/jersey club playlist (250tracks) and from there i know what songs to play and how i will mix them. Then there's always the search feature for the tracks that just jump in my head....

I basically do, the software is just another way to carry crates of records around..........everything else is just a perk. And you still never answered my question, what did you do before software??

I don't use folders that much, only when I have to pick certain type of music or videos. I like to use the browser and pick my selections on the fly so my sessions are never the same week in and week out, besides it's enjoyable for me and to the customers even if I do the same gig several days in a week they never know what's coming and when I have to feed the crowd, they get fed.....
I like the rating system, but I even go further and Star up the Title where it counts.. A color scheme would be even better so you wouldn't have to decipher anything..
What i'd like to see in the upcoming 8 version is the ability to hold several browser windows open at the same time for different searches that could be minimized to the task bar or overlay like Word Docs to quickly pick from any window at will, this would be a faster way to get to what your looking for in my opinion..

So your hip hop is mixed with you house in the same list.

We managed our music in our own ways (I organised my collection alphabetically by artist name). But then we all realised that our lives could be made easier using software to manage our libraries, which frees us up more time to do more creative stuff when mixing.
Sarcastically telling someone that they should just "Know their music..." as if to imply that I am somehow not as good as you because I have a different system, isn't really a good way to endear yourself to people. Especially people you don't know.
I was asking a valid question about how people manages their music collection, because I couldn't see how he could do certain things that I find pretty easy thanks to using a decent music manager.

So you acknowledge that software has given you some 'perks' that wouldn't have been possible before you had it?
That's my point entirely. That's the whole reason VirtualDJ/Serato/Traktor/MediaMonkey/ITunes/etc... exist - to enable people to do far more with their music collection than they would previously have been capable of otherwise.
That doesn't mean that someone who doesn't use software is in any way inferior to those who do. It just means that they either don't know about how much more they could do with the help of the right software (in which case, informing them is a good thing), or they don't care (in which case, it would be a waste of time trying to convince them).
But that doesn't mean I shouldn't ask questions.
