How many songs do you usually use for your events? (ranging 3-4 hours). And also, what genres do you generally use? I know it varies from event to event. I just want to get an Idea.

Also, How much music do you all have, in regards to memory? (20 gigabytes, 3 terabytes etc).

Take your first paying gigs, then ask again. <Just an advice. Take it!;-)

take every scrap of music you have, remember what you have and don't have, then know that you will probably need more than that, and put it on multiple drives in case one fails.

and then subscribe to Content Unlimited because you're still going to end up needing that one track you don't have that some soccer mom trying to impress her friends wants to hear so she can shake her booty to it. badly.

but seriously. all your music, all your hard drives. and content unlimited.

These sort of questions need to be asked in the school yard, but they keep reappearing here on the forums, if you need to ask, I don't think you'll have much luck in your core subject.

Sorry if this sounds harsh but how long is a piece of string, average four minutes a tune, divide that into 60 and times that by the amount of hours you are going to play... simple.

As for genre's your party or venue will dictate what you need to play.

I agree with Paul here, how long is a piece of string. You could chop songs all night and play thousands or you could play them from start to finish and play hundreds.

I also agree with wildcountryclub - subscribe to content unlimited if your venue has an internet connection. As you get more work then rely less on content unlimited and buy your music, but to start of, this will help you out.

I use it a lot, mainly because I might only do 10-20 gigs a year now so there is no reason for me to buy "everything". I but what I want to buy, but everything else I stream (caching first obviously).

Genre?? Find out what the venue or party wants to hear and base it around that, but with CU you'll have those bases covered anyway for when wilds "soccer mom" turns up!! 😉

If I was asked to do a 1 hour set I would take 3 hours of music with me (back when I carted round record boxes) These days I just take my paltry 70 GB collection (about 7000 tunes) on a 1/2TB harddrive, the size you need depends on your track bit rates but if I was asked to do an hour the minimum I would take with me is 1GB @320Kb/s

I agree with all the others - take every track you have. There's no excuse these days. Also, the public have come to expect it.

They are able to carry thousands of tracks in their pocket and download songs on the spot, so they expect a DJ to have even more tracks, play anything they ask for, and to download instantly.

What type of gigs are you playing?

If you're DJing in a club then your range of genres and decades is probably not so important. As long as you have the latest floor fillers (in whatever genre the club plays) and a bit of back catalogue, you could get away with it.

If you're a mobile DJ playing to a mixed crowd (mixed in age and taste) then you'll need a much wider collection.

Think of how many genres there are, then think of how many decades there are. Now, how many tracks from each genre in each decade do you have? If for instance you were asked to DJ at a 70s rock night, do you have enough 70s rock for 4 or 5 hours? Same for every other genre and decade. It soon adds up.

Also, IMO never rely on being able to download at a gig.

Make sure you have a good enough selection of tracks to DJ the night without needing to go online - because you may not be able to get a connection. This is especially important if the client has provided a list of certain songs to be played. Make sure you have the tracks, and that they will play without needing a connection.

I have 4 terabytes of music from 1940 to today or tomorrow. This includes audio, video and karaoke and no copies. Very rarely do I not have a song someone requests at my gigs. Average 4 hour gig takes about 100 songs. One night I dj for kids and another night I DJ for semi retired another night I play for country music lovers so I keep all genres of music. Most importantly, you can't play your favorite songs, you must play for your crowd. I'm asked all the time what is my favorite music or artist to listen to. I tell people I don't have any favorites, I appreciate everything. Commercial or radio play music is what kept my business alive for so long.

Honestly there is nothing wrong with asking these questions!

It is a good question for a person new to DJing to ask. I remember when I started at 12 DJing a party for my cousin's b-day party and only realizing at the party I didn't bring enough music. That never happened again. I'm 52 now and DJing full time. It's been my career since the age of 16.

I am at around 70,000 tracks, 11,000 karaoke , but always try and have access to CU
