For VDJ8, using a Hercules RMX2, I am unable to manually create a backspin sound by turning the deck counterclockwise. When I do it, no sound is made? Does anyone know why and if there is a certain setting I need to have? Worked in VDJ7.

You are pushing down on the jogwheel, and the scratch button is selected on the controller? This is a mechanical jogwheel.
