How Do My Fellow DJ's Feel About Dual 15" Cabinets Vs One 18'' Sub ? i always see DJ's flying a 12" & or 15" over a 18" Sub..... in my opinion that's just extra wires & plugs. what's ya take on just getting the Dual 15" Cab's and be done with it ?

Oh, you are asking about comparisons between using a pair of 15" full range on their own vs 15"s with an 18" sub....

I though from the title that it was two 15" subs vs one 18" sub. :-)

What you have to bear in mind is the design and freq resp of the particular cabs.....

Most full range 15+horn cabs will have limited internal volume (as in space) for the bass/mid driver, as a deliberate design because people don't want to carry round huge cabinets. Because of this, the bass will be limited. Also because it's a two way cabinet, the 15" driver would be handling a wider freq range than a dedicated bass driver.

It's fairly typical for 15" full range cabs to have a freq range from 50Hz upwards. Some go slightly lower but in most cases, real low bass is out due to the design.

OTOH an 18" sub is designed to produce bass. The driver doesn't have to handle any other frequencies. Cone and cabinet size usually mean a lower bass response.

IMO you'd want to avoid using a sub that only extends to the same low freq as the top cabs. If your tops extend to 50Hz then don't choose a sub that also only goes to 50Hz! First, that's hardly worthy of the name (not realy a 'sub'). Second, you're not extending the frequency range of your top cabs - only creating a "hump" at 50Hz.

cool thanx Groovin DJ here is what i got & the specs: just need some solid advice which way to go B4 i spend my hard earned income tax $ :-) Right from my yamaha book in front of me = i own a set of DSR 112's (55hz-20khz) also have DSR 115's (45hz-20khz)
wanting to buy a set of DSR 118w (40hz-130hz) or the Dual 15'' Cabinets DSR 215's (45hz-20khz)
so your saying stay with the 18" cause its a Lower hz ?

I would pair the 112s with the 118.

As the 215s don't go any lower than the 115s I don't see much point in going in that direction. Maybe a fuller bass, but not lower.

If using the 115s on their own, again there's not a whole lot of difference when adding the 118 sub (an extra 5Hz) so would it be worthwhile?

You would get the benefit of three way vs two way when adding a sub though...

The best thing is to have a listen. Take some tracks you know well, with some nice low bass notes, and see what you can hear.
