Depends on the source material, simple as that.

If your videos are all SD then they will look great on 720. If you have FHD videos then 1080 is better.

Same as watching a TV at home and noticing that episodes of "you've been framed" look like crap on a 4k TV.

I used to have a 720 plasma and Freeview looked great on it. Now with a 1080 LCD Freeview looks like crap but the HD channels are brilliant.

Um yeah we know that's why we've told you in the past to try and get nothing but HD content, lmmfao!!

But of course you told us we were full of it per usual....... You said HD wasn't/isn't necessary.

Guess we weren't lying after all Ron. ;-p

Since older videos are not HD then 720p seems fine to me at the moment. Even a dvd is not HD. Where would anyone get HD footage of say David Bowie, Abba or anything from the last century?
Around 85% of the music I play is pre 2000.

Hm I see the confusion..my hardware is incapable of 1080p, but can do 720p. Both are HD, but the cost of 1080p hardware is beyond my budget.
I watch the Vintage TV channel in the UK and if I can achieve their standards I'm reasonable happy.
I could output a 1080p video at @720p which seems to work.

Yeah that's where we differ, I play to a younger crowd so I don't need all that old stuff and yeah I couldn't get it in HD anyways unless I had the hook up with a record company. Maybe and that's a big maybe I could possibly upscale those older videos if I did have a hookup.

nah dude, they were recording stuff at high quality back then, it was just analogue - old 35mm film and high quality video contains much more visual detail than SD digital video. this is why you can get old TV shows on 1080p blu-ray and they look great - the original source is often available for high quality digital conversion. of course plenty of clueless people are simply upscaling crappy VHS recordings to 1080p and posting them on youtube, which is pointless BUT don't assume just because the content is old there can't be good quality HD video of it!

I never said there can't be high quality old footage.
However Vintage TV in the UK seems to struggle finding quality HD 1080p Abba videos, or anything else old..I wonder why?
I suppose the poor TV stations are a little short on resources.

Have you got some links to where I can get quality (not upscaled) old HD 1080p music footage?

Hm what i don't understand is why upscale any video..my laptop just deals with the different standards all by itself.

Ron (bigron1), did you know about David Attenborough's Zoo Quest (1954) being filmed in colour? Even though no one had colour TV back then.

If you not seen any of the footage, it's pretty amazing considering how old it is. Google it and be astonished!

by upscale i mean take a lower resolution video and enlarge it - its like simply digitally zooming and does not increase quality, however various filters are used to elimate artifacts, etc. most modern TVs etc. will automatically upscale to the TV's native resolution. unfortunately i dont have any links for content, but a great resource is blu-ray releases of old live concerts/concert films/TV specials etc. which can be ripped to video files without too much difficulty.

All that I ever see is around DVD standard.

If a specialist TV channel like Vintage can't get the HD material, then I have little chance.

Hm..making it bigger would just reduce the quality.

blu-ray releases of old live concerts/concert films/TV specials etc.
I don't believe there is much material like this, even simple music DVD's are quite rare.

Pop videos would have been shot on standard equipment for TV or VHS and are therefore not available in HD.

Movies are filmed in a completely different way for cinematic display which would have required a far higher resolution.

well, there are tons of blu rays of old concerts and concert films BUT the problem is its mostly live material and not music videos or lipsynced tv performances that would be suitable for typical VJ or karaoke use

I've just been having a Google to see what I could find. Results include other people looking for the same thing, but otherwise nothing (on 1st attempt anyway).

I imagine that as Keith said, some stuff would have just been recorded at the popular res of the day, so that's what we're stuck with.

Watching things even on Freeview, it's shocking how bad some of the old music vids are, compared to what we're used to now.

People accept a lesser quality so as to see the original footage. Interestingly a lot of work went into a recently released, reasonably high quality Beatles video album, however at the moment this is an exception to the norm.

I'm certain Vintage TV directly, or indirectly uses DVD's. I have some of those that they use.

Hm.. it's shocking how bad some of the old music vids are, yes I'm a little disappointed.

Anyway the DVD standard is lower than 720p HD, which is all my old laptop, and projector can handle. My TVs are OK for 1080p HD.
