A lot of people are now using Pioneer controllers, and some of the newer units are designed around Rekordbox, and offer "sound colour FX" controls, whereby the single knob filter effect can be changed to space, noise, gate (and these can be customized in software).

I know the VDJ mappings of these controllers have done their best to utilize this feature, but certain FX are missing or in my view need more development.

Personally I'd like to see "Space" get added, it's an effect I use quite a lot, and "Noise" is ok but it needs more work, to sound as good and be as functional as it is on Pioneer mixers.

You can actually do a lot yourself.

On top of the basic effects that comes with VDJ out of the box, and the ones at the download page, remember that VDJ also supports .vst effects, which means that you can basically add any effect you want to the software, as long as you have it in a 32-bit .vst version. So if you have the "space" effect you can simply add it and use it

On top of that you can map how you use them, so you can combine them any way you want - on 1 button if you like - sequence them, let them do auto parameter changes along the way (or use manual parameter change like on Pioneer gear) and so on. So basically there is really nothing you can't do with VDJ and effects when you start playing with it

A while back I made a small video where I combine effects in 8 different ways on a pad page.
It's just for inspiration, and the idea is that you can do the same with any effect combinations you like. It may be worth watching

The question is, when you have software out there with high level FX built in as standard, why would anyone serious about FX want a program that only really offers workarounds and relies on untested VSTs.

In this era of Serato, Traktor and RB, it's clear that Virtual DJ needs to take FX more seriously, especially now that the core program is solid.

So you're saying that VSTs are for people who aren't serious, and that they're workarounds?

IMO the complete opposite is true. VSTs are used by all the top flight DAW software (originating in Steinberg's Cubase in '96).

IMO it's the software which doesn't support VSTs that's not serious. Being stuck with what's built in? That sucks. I'd rather have a choice of thousands.

Plus, why is it such a big deal to have the same (or similar) FX as Pioneer? Surely being an individual is better than being a sheep?

This should be filed under the same area as those who want a skin that looks like Traktor or Serato s/w.

So what's your argument for us not having the best video fxs??

Because after I've used Mix Emergency or Serato video for that matter ours are really behind the curve still! And I've been asking for better video fxs since v7!!

A skin which doesn't look mickey mouse would be nice sure, but that doesn't mean imitation, originality is still possible.

The FX VDJ offers are not really original though, they're pretty standard, while other software have more innovative offerings. Surely the "noise" effect which was added is a testament to this fact, that was taken straight from Pioneer and nobody is complaining, if you can't beat them join them, I'm just asking for "space" or something similar, I think people would like it and use it. I'm not sure why you've taken it upon yourself to defend VDJ at every turn, even when the request is constructive and one that could benefit people.

I'm not defending VDJ. I'm stating my opinion (IMO = in my opinion).

In any software, I'd rather have access to a huge variety of FX of my choosing than a few built in ones that I can't change or add to. I'd also rather be unique than have the exact same handful of FX that other DJs use.

Huey, I don't do video so I have no opinion/comment about video FX.

But being able to use the same ones differently shows your creative side, no??

So who cares if there the same not every single dj uses them all the same way!

Fair enough.....

What I don't like is coming here and making reasonable requests, which a number of people would benefit from, and then have that request shunned by another user. It isn't a binary choice, Virtual DJ can create its own plugins for the app as well as supporting VSTs (as is currently the case), if VDJ add some insane audio and video FX would anyone complain? I don't think they would, I think many people would enjoy them.

I don't think VDJ (Atomix) is that much into any of that. It's more of a user thing
Atomix builds the base, but then skins and effects, and sometimes controller mappers and other plugins are often made by the users

Sometimes the users making theses addons are also Atomix employees (like SBDJ who recently made the Transform effect), but often they are not (like nassausky who recently made the TimeSkip effect for automix mode)

I really love that way of working together with the users, and that we always have tons of plugins to choose from :)

The current effects available I can find for creating white noise are NoisePattern and Auto Sweep
Those were both made by SBDJ, and if you have suggestions for improving them, there are two comment threads:

http://virtualdj.com/forums/194952/addons/NoisePattern.html?page=1
http://virtualdj.com/forums/191713/addons/Sweep_Auto.html?page=1

I'm sure SBDJ would love the input

I just did a bit more digging, and the Space effect on Pioneer should simply be a 1-knob reverb effect, that only reverbs the low freqs when turned to the left and only the high freqs when turned to the right.
Since it's basically EQ settings for a standard reverb implementation, I would be surprised if that would be hard to make by the effect creating users on this page. Maybe make a thread directed at SBDJ at see if he has the time for it?

Here is an example of the space effect explained for inspiration
