It appears that my iTunes playlists can be imported but a large number of the tracks are imported with a blank title - the track can be played but missing the title makes it difficult to know beforehand what I am playing!! Anyone know how to solve this?

Depends on what you have set VirtualDJ to fill the Artist/title fields from (filename or ID Tags)
Try with the setting getTitlesfromTag to Yes (from VDJ Settings-->OPTIONS tab)
Select all files in a Playlist (CTRL+A)
Right-click ->Batch->Reload Tags
