Is there a version of virtual dj or another recommended app that I can use on my android tablet as a back up at weddings etc. In the event of a failure?

No, VDJ is Windows or Mac OS only
There in an Android VDJ remote app, but that "just" controls the software on the main laptop

I use the djay app as a backup. That's iOS only unfortunately, but it's quite good for a mobile app. It can even interface with some controllers.
Might be worth picking up an iPad Mini and loading it up with music.
