Is there a way to dynamically change a custom button name? For example rather than using an XML editor and modifying the skin file and then loading it into VJD, can I just set custom_button 1 to change it's name to the current song loaded? ie modifying the macro for custom button 1 inside VDJ setting something like get_loaded_song title and displaying it on a button?

Yes, (you have the right idea), just need to add your script with back-quotes around it, to the "Button name" field of the custom button.
(something like shown in image below)
the actual button script of the button, the action, is of your choosing.
in the above example, loaded, was used in to highlight the button when the deck is loaded.
Note: This technique is better suited for showing shorter fields, like Genre, or User 1 or maybe Comments, since song Titles often will exceed the number of displayed characters of a custom button.
