I'm trying to stop the software from automixing. I'm evaluating the product to do 'social' parties and not any type of techno or house where i need to use BPM. I'd rather be able to load up the decks and start / xfade on my own... Especially if I want one to end and be 'dead air' until I'm rady to start the other deck. There has to be a simple way of doing this, but I'm missing it.
Can you advise?

You have to disabled auto mix possibly enabled by shortcut at keyboard. Check your shortcuts in VDJ preferences to find one which is for disable automix. You can also enable/disable automix using this button in skin (only in some skins):
You can also set Fade Lenght to minimum and crossfader will move very fast to another side when using automix.
