Topic: Organising your files

Dieses Thema ist veraltet und kann veraltete oder falsche Informationen enthalten.

Hi everyone,

Not so much of a problem, more about getting some feedback and learning the pros and cons of how other people organise their files.

I have about 7000 MP3's and about 3000 video files that i use. At the moment, i keep them all in 2 folders, 1 named video and 1 music.

I want to create genres to file my media in for ease of finding them, ie 70's, 80's 90's, Indie, etc, but i want to ultimatly keep the main music and video files seperate, as they are on 2 different drives.

So, i understand about using the virtual folders, or alternatively i could create subfolders in my main video / music windows folders and do it that way.

No rights or wrongs here, just wondered what other peoples preferences are, and their reasons?

Oh, and another thing . . .

Is their a limit to the amount of virtual folders you can create? Does having too many slow the system down in anyway or cause any other problems?

I will tell you that I have 3 catagories: Music, Video, and Karaoke. I have moved all my files into specific genres inside of these 3 catagories in seperate folders like this:

Music
ALT
DANCE
ETC
VIDEO
ALT
DANCE
ETC
KARAOKE
A
B
ETC

Hope this helps

Thats the way i've been doing it at the moment, but the problem i've found is when you are working with 1000's of files and using so many folders, its very easy to have duplicate files in different folders, taking up more room than necessary.
Also, some files could fit in 2 or 3 catagories.

The good thing about the virtual folders is a shortcut is placed in the folder, not the actual file, so you can have a file in as many catagories as you like without deleting the file.

One thing i've found thats a little annoying is you can put the same file in a virtual folder more than once, with no warning from VDJ that its already there.

No one has commented on the virtula folders yet, are they stable, will too many slow down VDJ?

Are the browsers in all the skins the same, or are some a lot better suited for filing? (I'm waiting for Virtual Vinyl to be released so can't download any yet)

So, what is the best way or organising 1000's of video and audio files?

Garybr, I too was wondering about the virtual folders... I began using PCDJ which had waitlist, I believe this was a virtual folder. I am wrestling between Virtual dj and Cue , i guess its really based on the hardware. I use the software for my karaoke show , but have a dj for over 28 years. I used to play songs off of rocks haha.
Are there virtual folders in Virtual DJ ?
or are they in CUE. Am i correct in assuming they are like the waitlist in PCDJ ... I would like this very much as It makes it easy for me to find popular songs for sets. and yes some songs fit in more than one catagory and allow me to switch between the two... kinda like a suggestion.
I thank you in advance for any help, with the virtual folders.

Also can someone clear up something for me... I watched one of the videos with Cue and Total control and they state you get Cue Le and Traktor... and then he says something like ... "if you want to project the video to another screen you need to purchase an upgrade for 299.00 Please look into this thanks Michael

I use other way...

I have my music in a folder, then subfolder by artist. (WINDOWS FOLDERS)

I have another folder with many subfolders referring to different styles (Chill, House, Reggae, ...), and there I place "SHORTCUTS" to the original audio files. (WINDOWS FOLDERS AGAIN)

VDJ can read from the SHORTCUTS, also "ARTIST - SONG" structure. and SHORTCUTS are about 2Kb of disk space.

Then I have a FAVOURITE folder in VirtualDJ referring to that folder with the STYLES SUBFOLDERS and the SHORCUTS inside.
