Hi all
This is rather annoying, all the songs i have ripped using itunes don't come up with artist names in VDJ, just the track title.
Any ideas??

Does your files have the following name convention :
artist - track.mp3
That will seperate artist and track in the browser.
Alternatively, you can read artist track IDtag, but that needs your tracks to actually have such tag inside them

Ermmmmmmm.
They don't seem to have any artist name in the file name.
They have been ripped through itunes.
When in VDJ in the browser i click on music, itunes, itunes music and then a seperate folder comes up for each artist, then click on on and i get the album and then the songs. But in the main browser window only the song names come up no artist.
Maybe there is a settting in itunes i need to change so that when it rips the songs it puts in the artist name in the file name.
I am very new to Mac by the way :)
Thanks

There should be ;)
MAke sure it uses this convention : Artist - Track.mp3
It can be complex, as long as the " - " seperates
Such as :
Jay-Z featuring Justin Timberlake - 99 problems on my sexy back (Dj Whatever Remix).mp3
NOTE: The SPACE HYPHEN SPACE ( - ) separates artist & track, therefor the in the name Jay-Z, the hyphen is ignored :)

Yeah i think i understand but i can't find n option or anything in itunes to change it.
So i rip a cd as mp3 to itunes.
But the actual file name doesn't have the artist in it. So it doesn't come up in VDJ. But is fine in itunes.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but guess what, you're going to have to do what I did for 16,000 + tracks. You're going to have to insert the artist's name in all the filenames. It sucks but there's no way around it. Make the copy and paste keyboard shortcuts your friends. Besides, the artist names that come up on CBBD are wrong half the time anyways because whoever the first one to name all the tracks in the CDDB database is the one who permanently carves it in stone for the rest of us. They'll name a Snoop Dogg CD as "Blues" in the genre field or mispell the artist's name so if you want all your tracks to be correct you'll have to go over them one by one to avoid mis-labels. It took me a couple of months to do and it sucked but it's all a distant memory now and it was worth it because now I know all my tracks will appear correctly. Apparently there are other ID tag programs you can purchase online that might allow you to insert batch artist's names but I went through the trouble of using Itunes for my ID tags because I use my tracks with both Virtual Vinyl and Itunes and I didn't want any discrepencies between the way the two programs read the files.

iTunes will not add the Artist name in the filename when it rips as far as I know. This is why I recommend you not use iTunes. If you insist on using iTunes to rip the file, I recommend use a renamer application. Those can rename the file using any pattern you like, using the id3 tags to form the new filename.

There are software titles out there that will rename your files for you automatically. None come to mind, but google "ID3 Tag File renamer" and some good things should come up. I've used some of them a longgg time ago, and remember them working fairly well. A word to the wise: Back up your music collection on an external hard drive prior to going in and having a software automatically "fix" everything. This way if anything gets screwy, you can always revert to the way things used to be.

Backup is good. I (being a bit untrustful) have 2 identical hard drives(1 for pc, 1 for mac) and I also back up to DVD.

Although this thread is under the mac forum, the best way to rip your tracks from a CD and have the naming convention correct (for free and no 3rd party software)....dare I say it???...is to use...Gulp....Windows Media Player...................is it safe to come out from under the table yet? LOL.
I don't know if WMP for Mac can do it but I know for a fact it does a really good job under XP.

This is annoying. I have the same problem, the only thing is I can't go and re-rip all of the music I have because a lot of the music I have is from other DJ's and or CD's I no longer have. Why can't VDJ just fix this in it's software? Programs like MixMeister read Itunes way if importing perfectly! It's lame! FIGURE IT OUT GUYS!

this is pretty STUPID.
the PC version can read the artist tags of iTunes, but the mac version cannot.
i know, i have both versions and Macintosh VDJ can't read Artist tags.
this is so lame.

ok, this is easy to solve.
just select all your tracks in VDJ, then right click, File Infos, "Title from Tag"
this worked for me!
now i have all my artists!

Kivosi's method works....as a point of reference if you open itunes and go to the preferences area...and in the area that says 'store" deselect the area that says "place files into album and artist folders......." then you should have just " arist - song name.mp3"

First of all, the "place files into album and artist folder" is in the "Advanced" section of the preferences area, and secondly, deselecting that option does not change the file name to the "artist - song name.mp3" format, the artist will still be missing from the file name.
