Out of all the "Basic controllers" I think the Numark Total Control looks the business.
The only thing that let's it down is that it has no built in soundcard. That's why I went for the Herc mk2.

Yeah, I liked alot of the features I saw on Numarks webiste but the soundcard turned me off. Man does the Cue software look like VDJ!!
I liked the load button and stuff like that which I am sure the Herc has but the Numark does look the business more but it seems to be missing the more needed features. At least for me.

I'm surprised that nobody has yet mentioned the M-Audio Xponent. It looks to be one of the neatest controllers on the market with good jogs, lots of controls, and a built in audio interface. However, I have read lots of reports of quality problems, and it is a bunch more expensive than the other units.
I think a little guy like the total control (well, little compared to the two turntables + Pioneer DJM-600 I have), along with a Motu Ultralite would allow for a real nice setup. You can plug your mikes and heaphones directly into the Ultralite, and you can use the software (or the front panel of the actual soundcard) for a mixer to adjust your levels... so it'd give the same flexibility as having an 8 channel mixer, sort of, but way less stuff to lug around. It'd probably be a great setup for doing a Karaoke, DJ, Video combo kinda thing.
I'm really used to mixing on the high end Pioneer mixers... love those things, especially the DJM-800, so I'm not sure if I could be the ultimate mixmaster on a cheesy little MIDI controller like that, but for a mobile gig it'd be a lot nicer to unpack and set up, that's for sure!

I own both Hercules controllers the MKI and the MKII, they are ok but they age fast and you have to tweak them and clean them inside, the MkII is a lot better built, does a lot for the price and is great for mobile dj and small parties, but is no pro gear in any way shape or form, scratching is pooor, is missing commands once in a while and the stick is useless.
Numark DMC2(@$330) is a much better controller, but needs a sound card and an external mixer and I hate the wheel assignment toggle, still the best match for VDJ, the scratching is a poor because of the size of the wheels and because they are not touch sensitive.
The Xponent you can get for $400 is a good match but will be a lot better if would have native support, so far I do believe that the wheels issue is about to be solved.
Another viable option for you will be getting a better sound card (maya44 around$100) and an external mixer and just use custom keyboards shortcuts.
Numark has two usb mixers (they have a two stereo channel sound card incorporated) I do like the cm200usb better (about $200 new on ebay), this one will give you two channels for the two players and you can pipe the preview and sampler through the computer's native card and connected to the channel three, plus has a good mike input and spare channels. This will not be too disruptive to your djing style and will get you ready for the pro gear, without having to put up with the Hercules’s problems, in fact the Numark cm200usb and the Numark Total Control is the most cost effective way to control the vdj and do it well without doing tcv or tccd.
You can spend $250 for the Hercules or $400 for both the Numark cm200usb and Numark Total Control so your budget is important too.
Even if you buy the Numark cm200usb and the Hercules mp3 ($99) is a cost conscious solution, but if price, small compact portable size, tcv or tccd are important then the Hercules is your solution

uuuuuhhhhhhh don't hate me ..... i don't have the herc but know a few people who do ...
i do understand the appeal of having the soundcard and controller and it's very cheap too .....
i have several issues with the all in one concept ......to talk about the herc the soundcard dos not have a real hot output and the sound quality is only acceptable ......
when i migrated to digital djing one of the few things i managed to accidentally get right was i decided to keep it simple stupid and take care of all soundcard and mixer issues first ...... so from the very beginning i had a reasonable m-audio card and mixer and headphones ......
i knew i didn't have the sophistication to know what i would need other than that so i just didn't buy anything else ....hey at least i didn't waste any money on items that were a poor match to what i needed ......
i didn't even have sense enough to know to have an external drive or 2 ......
i think what i'm leading up to here is .....since you have a huge boost in the ease of use and increase in portability of your music due to no longer carrying cases and cases of cd's or vinyl why not be happy with that ??
i try to get the best a la carte components i can afford , and then after making quality , not portability , the priority , then after the fact try to make it rack mountable or more easy to set up .......... but if it isn't the easiest thing there ever was , too bad .....
anytime i buy anything it has to be significantly better than it's predecessor .........
i'm sure a soundcard and a controller don't weigh anywhere near an skb case with 400 cd's in view paks ........
also you have to listen to this stuff , in my case at least 50 hours a week ..... might as well enjoy the way it sounds ........

I have an MK2 and I will probably upgrade to the Xponent if it ever becomes natively supported by VDJ. Doesn't it also have touch sensitive jog wheels for scratching?

IMO there aren't currently any all in one solutions (with a built in sound card) that can be considered a complete professional solution.
The Mk2 is probably the most reliable and VDJ friendly. But as a Controler it is extremely cramped and doesn't look very professional. But for what it costs, it's a great little device. I would recommend it as a brilliant way of getting into DJing. I own one but i've been using it strictly as a sound card/mixer for almost the past year, and which since i have been using the NTC as my Midi controller.
However i have just ordered a DJ/IO as i believe it is a better sound card and because the output level of the MIC on the MK2 ir ridicously low, so much so to the point it isn't worth having it. Plus it just seems to make sense to use the NTC and DJ i/o together!
For my small DJ jobs (where i am the sole DJ) i will use the NTC & DJ i/o, for the bigger Jobs (multiple DJs, multiple Decks) i will use a traditional mixer and plug the DJ i/o into it.
IF you want an all-in-one you are seriously cutting down your options, so much so to the point that you'll be sacrificing quality in one area or another.
I for one would like an all-lin-one, but there isn't anything out there currently that ticks all the boxes i want
- Sound Card with decent Audio Quality
- Ergonimcally pleasing and logical layout
- High Build Quality
- Good Tactile Response from all buttons, knobs & sliders.
- Decent Touch Sensitive Jog Wheels
- Controls dedicated to navigating recordcase
- Generous Input & Output options
- Genreous helping of buttons and dials that can be user assigned in addition to all the normal functions.
- All aspects fully compatible & Easy to setup with VDJ
- Lights up in all the right places
- Finally, not a must, but it would be nice if it looked so god damn sexy that you would want to take it to bed with you!
Now is that too much to ask for?

Does anyone know if the behringer BCD3000 has a sound card?
Can someone outline what the best options are here... I have VDJ, and MK1. Experiencing MAJOR problems. Can't get outputs to work. Have soundblaster soundcard too, and laptop one, but am willing to buy another.
Numark total control + DJ i/o seems to be a good option.
Any other ideas? I also have a Numark mixer that I don't use for anything right now.
What about the Numark usb mixer cm200 with the CDJ-400...? Anyone recommend that?
Is Behringer really that bad? I have spoken to many DJs about the hercules products being terrible to be honest, and I'm angry I bought mine, I've been trying to get it to work right for over a year.
Thank you for any help!

Behringer is not stable at all with certain mother boards or video cards overall with many laptop.

Well I'm about to find out about this BCD2000 - I have one coming in tomorrow 01/17/08. I ordered it before I did indepth research. If I can't get it to work out (I will update the board on my experience) I'm going with M-Audio and M-Audio sound card. We shall see how this ends in next couple of days.

I think this is one of the best features of the Herc, you can plug it directly into a aux channel of the main mixer of a club or bar, it's abit crude I know but you can be up and running in 10 mins.
Also this leaves the main channels free just in case everything goes pear shape with VDJ. You can run of the club or bars cd players untill you get VDJ up and running again.
I do it this way if I'm late getting to a gig.

Well, I did buy the Herc MK2. Should be here in a couple of days and I will report my luck with it. I love the talk here though. Some great info!!
Anything I should know about setting up? Tricks, tips, do or don'ts? Thanks for everyone's help BTW.
Hey also, how doyou add the little MK2 logo by your name? Not that it really matters

This is what I'm trying to decide on.
I have one XP10 so I may just buy another, they're great little units. If a mixer was needed I'd take either a Total Control or the Pioneer DJM-400. The Vestax is tempting too, but buying that plus a decent soundcard would cost a lot more (considering that the mixer would hardly be needed out of house).
