I have what i believe is a really basic question: virtual dj has the option of connecting an external mixer (in the sound setup menu). how does this work? i personally cant see the way to connect a non-MIDI mixer to a computer. can anyone please please help me by telling me how, and how this would impact mixing in general in virtual dj?

If using a non-MIDI external mixer, than you are simply outputting the sound channels to the mixer. Control is done either from mouse, keyboard or another controller...

I surpose you would have to go though a soundcard with more than 1 output, ie 2.

The way i'm thinking, Output 1 of your soundcard will go to channel 1 of your mixer and output 2 will go to channel 2 of your mixer, then you will be able to cross fade between the 2 channels.

Then disable the cross fader in VDJ.

I think that would work or I may be totally wrong,

jimmy is correct, external mixer requires 2 or more (stereo) channels outputted (stereo becomes deck 1, and so on). additionally you need 1 stereo input channel to record or broadcast. you need 2 stereo ins if you want to use two timecoded vinyls or cds. 3 in total if you want to both.

just leave the vdj crossfader in between. rest is mixer-hands-on.

you can do it with a stereo surround sound card, or a more professional external card (or internal if you use desktop machine) or even two soundcards that are not the same brand.

so from what I understand.....

I currently have a Numark DJ IO. Essentially all I want is to replace my Numark Total Control console simply because its been giving me too many problems. I was considering getting the Numark DXM Pro external mixer, which is non-MIDI. Can anyone please let me know specifically how I could make Virtual DJ work with this console (remember I also have a Numark DJ IO)? Also, would it be possible to use Virtual DJs internal record function with an external mixer? thank you so so much for your help

same deal. i had a look at the specs, you still need a soundcard. the pro dxm has a DAC (digital analog converter) but it's only outbound. you still need a sound card that will output two stereo channels to the mixer and one stereo channel back in for recording. the good news is that your input for recording can be digital.

have a look at the m-audio audiophile firewire card. it would be good enough for your purpose.
