depends how you are going to use them, do tou need sampler or not, do you like buttons or touch pad for starters pio 500 is the best choice.
I would get the kaoss pad 3, is the latest of them and they are dedicated to effects anyway I'm happy with just the djm 800

I've had experience with the Kaoss pad, and it's amazing, the EFX is OK i guess, but the price is murder, IMO, go with the Roland SP-404

I'm borrowing a boss sp-303 right now but I just don't think I'm very happy with it. Isn't the sp-404 basically the same thing?

I have the SP-303, I think it is the same as the 404, only with more sampler banks and the 404. The 404 doesnt use smart media cards, I think now they are using SD or CompactFlash.
But using the SP-404 or SP-303 as effects box??? Yes it can but it is not the same as an EFX box.
I recomend you that go to a local store (Guitar Center or somthing similar) and play with both and pick the one that covers your needs.
