will you be using it with a mixer? How many outputs does the Dell have?
I'm using the onboard sound for my computer.. sound is fine..
Keep in mind that most onboard sound only has a S/N ratio of 80db to 90 db..
The Sigmatel on my Intel motherboard states a S/N ration of >92 dB which was good enough for me. BUT most add on soundcards (and externals) boast a S/N ration of >100 dB or HIGHER!.. also most add-on sound cards have a higher output..
for instance my USB audioblaster extigy sounds WAY better then my laptops onboard soundcard..
Their are alot of options out there. What are you connecting to it? (IE: will this be next to a rack, in a bar, in a car LOL)

yes i will be using a mixer ( gemini cs-02). the dell has the simple outputs ( the headphone jack). this is the first time i am using a laptop i used my gateway pc in the past in witch i used the stock sound card and i was extreamly happy i used that for about 2 years and had a 300watt amp running from it.

It comes down to sound quality.. and what becomes the weakest link in the audio chain..
Maybe Gemini has changed over the years, but I know the one a bought as part of a cheap starter system (years ago), had tons of noise in it. A Numark was only a few bucks more and sounded way better.. (getting rid of my Gemini mixer was my first change).
When I first got my laptop I tried using the built in soundcard but the volume was so low I had to turn the gains on the mixer almost up to maximum (and I had to run in mono.)
I then got the Extigy external which made a HUGE difference in sound quality and volume, & kept me from wearing out the headphone connector on my laptop.
