£499 from www.play.com, Seen it on other site for betwwen £600 - £700.

sounds the same as the one in pcworld ... :)

The laptop jimmy b posted is the best one on here pricewise (although your one of the same model has a better GPU - the GT is superior to the GS). Ideally you want to avoid integrated graphics solutions and memory sharing does have a hit on performance. For £500 you are getting a good CPU (Intel run circles around AMD in this generation) with 4MB of cache, a decent mid-range GPU with 256MB of its own dedicated memory and 2GB of RAM. RAM is so cheap that you need not worry there are some laptops recommended with 3GB, 2GB should be enough but if you find that's not the case, it is a very easy and cheap upgrade to make.

I would reckon you can get a better laptop cheaper from laptopsdirect.co.uk with a 1440x900 screen - do you have a preference for 17" or 15.4" etc? This laptop at play probably has a bit of a premium because of the HD-DVD drive, that technology is now dead.

andrew87 so the one from PCworld will be ok then .. for video + plugins ....

The laptop you posted for £449 has an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 which is an integrated card. The post afterwards contains information for the 8600M GT which is a dedicated card, but there is no price for that configuration. Laptops come in all different configurations, the chasis remains the same, Aspire 5920 but the components are slightly different.

For a price of £50, the configuration jimmy b posted is far superior despite the lower RAM preinstalled. If this price difference here is an issue, you can get laptops with the 8400M GS for less than £449 with an equal processor and RAM which would give you better performance.

However, I don't really want to comment too much about VirtualDJ's video mixing and plugins as I don't have much experience with this particular feature and and don't want to give bad advice. Based on my knowledge with computing I would stay away from integrated graphics solutions if you require real-time video mixing, although there may be people who do mix well with the X3100. But I would like to bring this quote up from this thread.

really depends on the graphics card, let me let you in on a little secret, if its an nvidia card and its of the 8000 series, vista and vdj will work better. We've done some extensive testing. Mp4's will also playback better.

Therefore it seems advisable to get at least a 8400M card, preferably with 256MB dedicated RAM. At £400 this is doable. But if you do have the £500, the configuration jimmy b posted is a good system.

Andrew87 thanX for the help M8 :)
you have cleared somethings up for me there like...

Steve, After helping with this post I've actually gone out and brought that Acer from Play. It was the same as the one in PC world, but they didn't have any in stock at my local store so I ordered one from play. It should come in the next few days.

I can't wait now to have a go a Video. I just hope everything goes well on setting it up.

Cheer's Brian, I've been using a Toshiba Satellite Pro for a year now (just for audio and sometines the clipbank) and haven't had any problems, so hopefully your testing will go good.

I can't wait for mine to come :)

lol i have just bought the dell laptop you guys was talking about. I got it about 2 weeks ago. And as far as i can see its a quality laptop. I got a laptop to start doing my dj'ing through but also didnt know what i was looking for. A friend recomended this dell and for £242 (i thinks its in the sale at tesco's) you cant complain.

Ive only just come acrross VDJ as you lot can probably tell so i dont know anything about VDJ. Ive installed it and it works great. Just need to figure out how to use it now.

But the dell pc looks pretty good for me.

I still haven't got a one yet.. but a venue i work @ as just got a "Dell Inspiron 1525 T5550 3GB 250GB 15.4" laptop with PCDJ VJ (which i think is about the same as Virtual DJ). To do videos & it seems to work Ok...
