Does anyone know of a way on how to stop external hard drives from going into sleep mode I'm using 1tb western digital my book home edition but I've spoken to other companies & said that almost all the bigger sizes do that. I was wondering if any of the computer specialist here know of a way to stop them from going into sleep mode???????????????????????

DJ phenominal posted the link in a post I did about this issue, been using it for well over a month now and had no issues with my Maxtor going to sleep.
Start the program, set the time and which harddrive you to keep going. What it will do, it will send a signal ( depending on what time scale you set it at, I've set it at 8 mins) to the harddrive to keep it awake.
Then just minimize the app and it will run on your tool bar.

Also, if it USB, there is a setting somewhere in USB hubs part of device manager to disable windows from putting it to sleep to save power, just a thought, might work without having to have that proggy Jimmy suggested running all the time (although i'm sure it's not a resource hogger!).

I disabled that option in Device manager mate, but it didn't help me. My Maxtor still went to sleep.
All that program does is send a little signal to your harddrive every X minutes (depending on what you set it at) to keep your harddrive active. I can't see it being a resource hog, you don't even install it, it just runs of your desktop, or toolbar if you minimize it.

The sleep mode in Windows actually powers down the device, even with this disabled external HDD's "Spin Down" by themselves to a low state spin after a certain amount of time (depending on the manufacturer) but still have power to them. I have tested this software and it does the trick! Cheers!
