Topic: Questions about Virtual DJ Setup

Dieses Thema ist veraltet und kann veraltete oder falsche Informationen enthalten.

Hello everyone, I am a Serato user looking to convert to VDJ. I have a couple of questions and I am hoping I can get some experienced responses. More importantly thank you for taking the time to read and respond to my questions.

I am running Vista 32 bit on an Alienware Laptop 3gb ram. 500 gig HD, 2.26 chip, 9600 geforce video card
My current setup is running Serato, with a Denon D6000 and Pioneer DJM 3000 mixer.
I want to be able to mix video's and MP3's. I like the playlist option on VDJ and this is the big reason for the transition to VDJ.

1 - What do I need to run VDJ with my current setup? Can I control VDJ with my current setup?

2 - Can I run Serato and VDJ at the same time while I make the transition to VDJ? Can I run Serato on lines 1 & 2 and VDJ on 3 & 4?

3 - I am going to be changning my mixer and dual cd player in the next month. I am going with the Denon 4500, not sure on the mixer yet. Can the Denon 4500 control VDJ via MIDI?
What mixer would be able to control VDJ?
Can any mixer work with VDJ?

4 - Video, specifically doing video mixing, running a montage, connecting a camera to the whole system.
Can I use all these options with VDJ?
Would I need a separate Video Mixer to do this?
How would I run the video to 2 or 3 diffent monitor for display to the audience?

5 - Choosing a USB sound card that would help me with some of the things listed above?

Can't think of any other questions right now.

Once again thank you for your help.

Reading all you want to do, i can recomend you a dj controller like Hercules RMX at least.
All depends of your money.

You can buy EKS XP10 or some professional controller.

The laptop you have it's really good for VDJ.

You want to do a lot of things with VDJ, and the best purchase is a controller.

Ooh, i've forgot one thing.

You can config VDJ to sound only through out 1 or 2, and serato in the other.

The Denon HC4500 is natively supported in VirtualDJ (LED's and displays fully work) and there is also a custom mapper available to registered users that adds extra functionality to the HC4500. When combined with either a Denon X500 or X900 mixer, you will be able to use the mixer's crossfader to crossfade video in VirtualDJ (This is a highly recommended combination for MIDI control of VirtualDJ.) The HC4500 has its own built-in ASIO sound card.

Any MIDI compatible mixer can also be used to directly control VirtualDJ (Including the video crossfader.)

The Serato video mixer cannot be used with VirtualDJ (Except as an ordinary non-MIDI audio mixer.)

Thank you for you help.

A couple more questions.

1 - When mixing video with VDJ, can you choose to crossfade either audio or video. Or do you have to do both at the same time.

2 - I was considering getting the Numark AVM02 (not midi) to control my mixing with virtual DJ (using the denon 4500) and seperate DVD players. Would this be a better option vs a midi mixer? I still have video dvd not converted yet.

Thanks again

Yes, VirtualDJ has separate audio and video crossfaders that can be controlled separately (If you are using an external mixer, you should always leave the software audio crossfader in the centre position.)

If you will also be using normal DVD's, that would be a better option. However, you won't be able to control the video crossfader using it.

The HC4500 mapper has automatic video crossfading built-in, which allows you to automatically crossfade to either deck at the touch of a button.

O K sorry to jump in here, but this topic has answered a lot of questions for me except one.
Sometimes I like to save my mixes or mix to a file on my pc how can I do this if I am using an external analog mixer with VDJ or would I need a digital mixer?

U can hook up a few projectors or large screen monitors with a dvi or rgb input without too much load on your onboard video.

Thanks for the input gentlemen.

How can I crossfade video with the 4500 (In VDJ) without using a MIDI mixer?

Nissnut, if you have an input on your soundcard than all you have to do is send the an output from your non-midi mixer to it. Make sure you have a program that will except the input and record. Simpler way would be to buy the gemini Ikey which records directly to MP3. Its small and costs about $100.

True but VDJ has a facility built in to record or broadcast, however I want to keep it all in the digital domain so I will have to look for a mixer with a usb or firewire output.

The only way you can do this is by using the custom Denon HC4500 mapper. This allows you to perform smooth video crossfades at the press of a button when the controller is in video mode.

You can also start a song playing and crossfade to it by holding down JOGMODE and pressing PLAY.

Scratch Live will not run correctly without the SL boxed connected by USB. Does Virtual Dj have any such requirement? If you're using time code CDs for virtual dj, what piece of hardware translates that analog signal from the cd player and sends it into the software?

Serato is very upfront about the fact that there is a hardware requirement for Scratch Live and exactly how it fits in; I don't see that same level of detail with Virtual Dj. What am I missing?

VirtualDJ Pro is very flexible and can be used with a wide variety of sound cards and MIDI controllers, as well as timecode vinyl and CD's. It can even be used completely stand-alone using just your mouse and keyboard if you wish.

For timecode use, you will need an ASIO sound card with atleast 4 inputs (2x2 stereo) and 4 outputs (2x2 stereo.) This performs the task of sending the audio signal from the CD players (Or vinyl decks) to the software and also allows the resulting audio from VirtualDJ to be routed back to your DJ mixer.

Popular choices are Native Instruments Audio 4 DJ and ESI Maya44 USB. There is also a new DJ Trim sound card from Hercules (Who also make the popular DJ Console series of MIDI controllers for use with VirtualDJ.) The SL-1 can also be used as a timecode sound card under Windows only.

NOTE: Timecode use in the trial version is limited to 10-15 minutes at a time.

Hello everyone,
I've been a mobile DJ for 35 years now, and I'm just getting into the virtual world. I have Virtual DJ Version 5.2pro, but I don't really have a solid idea on how to set this up so I can output two stereo channels to my Vestax mixer. Can anyone help me along this process please?
Cheers,
Bill
