i remember when i first got into djing i picked up a tip from ztrip every once in awhile piss off the crowd just to make them appriciate the next song.....i agree now a days the newer dj's are playing juke box even if you screw up atleast have a reason for it ....... i sit in the booth with a constant (oh they liked that, lets see what they think of this dialog)

80's does not equate to crappy music.....unless you play crappy songs from the 80's. It's not that the owners are too old, most these days are actually very young compared to the "old days". The problem is a lot of these owners, like the Djs they hire, did not come up through the ranks (i.e. they were never bartenders, djs or managers themselves and trained by others who know how to do it)...they just came into some money or refinanced their house and opened a club and they don't know anything about operations and especially how a Dj is supposed to WORK a room to maximize sales. Their only exposure to music is either commercial top 10 played every 55 minutes or ecclectic or underground satellite they they personally like so they think this is what the Dj in their club should do.
If you are going to spend the time and money to open a club....like any business....do some research in the most important parts of operating it to find out how to do it properly......you don't build a house without blueprints, why open a club with the attitude "build it and they will come" cause that only works in the movies.

Amen. I agree wholeheartedly! I grew up DJing and clubbing, so I learned a lot from the area legends on how to keep a party moving. (Bad Boy Bill, Mickey Oliver, Julian Perez, etc...) I also use my personal experience to ask myself if what I'm playing would get me moving on the dance floor. (of course I have to modify that depending on the age group I'm djing for.) I have a club owner that thinks keeping the music at 140 BPM all night will guarantee him a packed house. (Please note this is a strip club I work for.) He doesn't realize that you wear your crowd out that way, even if they aren't dancing. You need a good ebb and flow to keep the bar rotating and the girls from getting totally worn out!

but a dj of these times and especially of "mp3 format" shouldnt say that music is crap and to play safe u go back to 80s music. do u know how much music is out there really? imo a dj who "goes back to the 80s because today's music is crap" is just plain lazy and doesnt take his job seriously.
a dj playing crooklyn clan mixes imo are a no no. they used to be hot in 98, 99, 00.
i was at a new years house party that played thru an ipod and i really enjoyed myself. some downloaded mix and whoefver that dj was had done a lot of remixing himself. very welll put mix. must have been over 2 hrs of non stop very good very well put together music.
even tho i "claim" to be "real" hiphop dj... djs days are numbered. first we new gen were laughing at vinyl dying now these megamixes are gonna kill human djs lol.
ur either gonna have to be very very very good at what u do or ur out.

I can't see megamixes (in the traditional sense?) replacing DJ's. There's no crowd entertainment, no interaction and no live flexibility.
Unless of course you are effectively megamixing on the fly by mashing tunes in quick succession. Guess what kind of profession would be doing that? ;)
Besides, who would the women flirt with?!

A problem these days is it's not what you know it's who you know.
If you're 'in' with DJ's and pub owners, chances are your get the gig, even if you know bugger all about mixing.

actually all this got me starting to think. Other than my mobile gigs with my new company I have stopped djing. I am returning to the lab. Wating and anaylizing tape and other dj's like a football coach. And focusing on the 'what is missing' I am glad I am at the bottom of the totem poll at my mobile place cause basically all i have to do is show up and they are happy. but those peole are slowly becoming my test subjects. I have dusted of the microphone and adding 'personality' back in the mix

This is a problem in ALL fields, not just Djing. Whenever there is more supply of employees within any given field the owners resort to one of two methods of hiring (1) who they know, (2) who they can get cheapest. The problem with who they get cheapest is that they are LOSING hundreds or thousands of dollars in sales because they think they are saving a couple hundred on the Dj.
I don't blame the bad Djs (which nowdays seem to out number the good ones about 100 to 1) as they just want a job too. I blame the owners and managers who either (A) don't know the difference or (b) are too stupid to realize how many thousands of dollars they are losing...but in the end it is their business and they are allowed to make all the mistakes they want...the unfortunate thing is it not only effects them but the livelyhood of dozens of emloyees who work for them...and those employees are the ones I really feel sorry for.

i dont think all crooklyn clan mixes are that bad but yes like everything else in life too much of a good thing is just plain bad...i like havin an occassional mashup of them just to bring a bit more energy (fatman scoop def seems to have too much haha)
but there are some other crazy things there that might just add a bit of spice to that track some people like and you might hate. while the dj should be in control it should be noted that u have to please the crowd somehow too, afterall u will be the talk after every night ("oh the music sucked", "oh that transition was great", "oh man the music was sooo good all night long")
also like someone mentioned earlier i rather take some notes on the transitions they do and then try and do them myself, which ive done a couple times
on to the discussion about todays music being crap, i think thats only if ur going on the mainstream , and also depending on the genre ur at. but it also goes down on the people, where i am sadly music HAS to be what you see on tv, or hear on the radio ...n trust me the radio here is shit is like we never left the 80s (not saying all of the 80s is crap but come on after hearing a song that is nice to remember once then hearing it again an hour later? and then again only to follow a break so we can hear the new rihanna song?)
i agree with that post mentioning that most managers just had the money built something and dont know anything of what their doing
and sometimes people are just creatures of habit
...and sometimes u just happen to be in the wrong place where everyone thinks u suck but maybe its the place where u are that sucks haha :P

If your gonna dig up a three and a half year old thread to have a rant, do it without the swear words if you wouldn't mind, there are a lot of young users that come here for inspiration and to gain knowledge.
