I started Dj ing about 13 years ago. I was using 1200s and a mixer with records.
I have been experimenting with V DJ free and realize I would like to get going again.
I plan to be all MP3 and was thinking the Hercules 4MX. My big question is laptop. I am a PC enthusiast but if Apple is the best way to go I will go that route.
Looking for some tips and thanks in advance.

I am leaning towards the Vestax Typhoon. Price point looks good.

Laptop is a matter of preference really. I have always been a PC user and LOVE Win7. XP was tremendous, Vista was atrocious, and 7 is terrific. I switched about a year ago and will never leave my Macbook for another now. I still have two Win7 Laptops and one Desktop but my MAC goes everywhere I go. It never fails me, and I have just grown to love it.
I'm using VDJ Pro on it and its great. I have talked to other DJ's that say they use Scratch Live because of its stability, but I have never had a problem with VDJ, since I began using it.
For Controller what is your budget? I have a Hercules DJ RMX and for the money it is great. I'm looking now at getting another one and Keep the Hercules RMX for backup and to take on travel since it is so portable. Features are great and it comes ready to use with VDJ. I'm looking at either the Denon MC6000 or the Numark NS6 (Not out until June 6th) for my upgrades, but I still love the Hercules.

I like the fact the Typhoon is 300 compared to 500 for the Herc.
Whats your style? I am progressive trance and house. Right now straight up mixing but may look at bring in Ableton Live too.

PC's are good but Mac can run at lower latecity levels.

Good Mac's cost heaps, I would get a pc and with the money you will save get a better controller, you only need a $400 lappy with 4gb of ram and it will be able to handle almost anything vdj can do, get one with a 500mb or 1gb video card if you want to mix videos. get windows 7 32bit, if your really keen on Mac you can make it into a hackintosh (google OSX86). For a controller I like big jogs and quality faders so I would get either the ns6 or pioneer ddj-t1 or ddj-s1 (2 deck version), vestax typhoon is neither of those its small and cheap, if that is your max price I would get a numark mixtrack pro, It has plastic faders but a better jogwheel, so it would be better to learn on.

This is where I will disagree. If you are going to use Laptop for DJ work for $$ why take a gamble on a $400 laptop? I have bought, fixed, built and repaired so many 400-500 laptops and they just do not cut it for making money. I will agree that a PC is fine as I said before but most quality Win Laptops start at 700.00. You can get a Macbook for 999.00. You always get what you pay for with a PC/MAC everytime. I am not knocking PC's I love them and have several win7 machines as I stated, but if you are going to work for money get a Quality Laptop either PC or MAC either one.
How many corporations give their employees a sub 500.00 laptop for work? Not very many and that is for a reason.

I meant second hand...

Or instead of a MAC you could go with a Hackintosh. The best of both worlds for half the price of a MAC. I have NEVER HAD A PROBLEM using a pc unless it was something I CAUSED. Something else to remember is there are more plugins on the pc side. That's because the effects are user made and most use a pc.
As far as a controller that really does boil down to you and your style of mixing. There are a ton of great controllers so I'd say try em out if possible before you buy.
MAC or PC it all can fail at anytime........

Thanks for the input guys. I build and repair PCs as well, and I am confident I can pick up a very good laptop running Win7 for a good price.
Is V DJ only available in 32 bit?

VDJ will work in 64bit but its most of the sound cards and controllers that won't work

Deejay Trim 4&6 is a good sound card that has 64bit drivers, also the Numark DJIO has 64bit drivers on the Numark web site. The NDX800 and ICDX CD players / HID controllers both work with Windows 7 64bit.
Hope that info helps,

Whatever you do, consider the face that some controllers have an internal soundcar & some don't. It makes life way easier to have one within the controller already. That is why I went with the RMX.

I can get the Hercules DJ Console Rmx for 300 while the Mixtrack Pro is 250. Is it worth the extra 50?
geposted Mon 16 May 11 @ 9:53 pm
That $50 gives you an LE license to VDJ and, a discount to upgrade to pro....

YES!! For reasons mentioned above and to me the Hercules is just so much better constructed (I did not say better performance, I said better constructed). But IMO its a better piece of equipment anyhow.

I have a Hercules RMX and I run it on a Toshiba Satellite laptop, never had an issue with it. (even on Vista..!!)
I got VDJ LE free with the RMX and upgraded to 7 Pro and never looked back, money well spent.

I vote for the Denon MC-6000 controller/sound card/full mixer. Regarding the laptop, one feature I highly recommend would be an illuminated keyboard, like some of the SONY VAIO's.
