I want a new lappy. Been using this Asus X750 for 4 years and it has been an animal. Was cheap to, $800. Would like to upgrade, but reviews on everything makes them questionable. What is working for you guys?

Which are your specification on your dell?

I used a desktop for many years, because I don't believe I should have to turn anything off. My first laptop was a 2014 ASUS ROG 751JT, i7, 16g RAM, NVidia 970M video card, 128 SSD (upgraded to 256), 1TB hard drive, DVD recorder. It's actually 2 years old this month. I don't remember how much I paid, it may have been $1700.00 or more (my Amazon history does not have the price listed anymore), I know I waited until there was a $100.00 price drop.
I can't speak about other computers, because I have never own anything else. I can tell you now, that my next computer will be an ASUS ROG. There are 4 USB 3 ports, but only the 2 on the right side can be used for hard drives. This is a known issue that I tried to look at when I first got it. To be honest, I don't care because it does not affect how I work. One of the right side ports is powered, so you can charge your phone, even if the machine is off. I use it for my powered 7 port USB 3 hub with 3 2TB hard drives connected. Two of the ports are for charging and one is high powered that my phone is connected to. The ports on the left side, I use one for my controller and the other for my Launch Pad S.
This machine runs 7 & 8 hour gigs on a regular basis. I have also done a 12 hour gig, without any issues. It runs very cool because of the copper heat sinks. I am online (on the forum), my anti virus is running and sometimes scanning, Three video websites open so I can download if I have to. Can rip a CD while playing, using Telly media and Telly Visuals, with camera feed.
I don't do all of these things at every gig, but I can. Which means I can do an all video gig, with no problems.
So that's my story, because this is the only machine that I know. There may be others out there that are just as great. I was actually thinking about getting another one, just to have this one as a back up, because I use a Surface Pro 3 now. That's what happens when you have a little money hanging around. Good luck in your search.

In regards to the size of the ASUS ROG that I use. I do not have a problem. I was used to a 23" screen with my desk top. I don't know how you guys can use those little screens. So what it weighs almost 10 pounds. Are you guys kidding me? Everything I bring into the gig weighs more than that, and I'm going to start crying because my laptop weighs more that 5 pounds? My speakers weigh 47 pounds, and I pick them up onto tripods. I don't know how much my subs weigh. So the weight of the laptop is does not concern me at all. The only thing is getting a laptop case that it will fit in.
Maybe you guys are still young and can see, but I started wearing reading glasses in my 40s, when I was trying to read the writing on CDs. There is no way I would go below a 17" laptop. If I found an All-in-one with a 27 " screen that would run VDJ, I would buy it.

Lol, it's not the weight of the laptop! I could careless about how much something weighs, hell I still lug around turntables on a regular basis!!
I guess this is more along the lines of having a bigger laptop screen sitting next to you on a stage but I suppose this is all coming down to personal preferences.
I am also looking at getting a new PC and you know me, it's more then likely gonna be ASUS ;-p
I'll definitely go check out the 17" ROG and let y'all know how it goes.
Thanks for the time and info.

AMAN, Sound Insurgent, ya might wanna check Clevo, Sager, and Xotic also. You can custom order to your specs quite easily here. And like I stated above, these lappys, as well as Asus and MSI, are all made by Clevo.:)

My Asus X58L seems to be doing well.
When I bought it years ago the CPU was a 2Ghz Celeron, with 1Gb memory, a 120Gb HDD, Mobile Intel® GL960 Express Chipset + ICH8M, and a Vista 32bit operating system.
Hm. I've just been testing it for tomorrow night.
I've had the countdown timer running, Tayla's NY video, video mixing, the sampler, effects, downloading tracks via CU..it all works!
OK.. so its now running Win10, has a 2.4Ghz Intel dual core cpu, 5Gb of memory, 1000Gb hdd and has been optimized for video mixing.
I suspect optimizing a laptop for video mixing is going to become a significant topic.
The alternative is to spend an awful lot of money on something like an Asus Rog.
Much is possible with whatever laptop you have!
Note: I've just bought a second hand 2 year old Asus K55a which works occasionally..LOL. I paid very little. This laptop is not regarded as being adequate for video mixing by some forum members. We will see!

I just did a custom configuration on a Clevo computer, and it was only $5203.00. I put in the order with custom color.

Good Lord AMAN, did you buy Intel!!??
geposted Sat 31 Dec 16 @ 6:30 am
I was waiting to see how long it would take, for someone to notice that. The key word in that statement was "only". I have some money on the side, but I am not that crazy. That is a down payment on a new car, which I am thinking of getting. Actually, a new mini van, can't carry all my stuff in a SUV. I could buy three laptops for that money. But the one I configured was the shet.

HaHaHa!! Yes, that would be a high end lappy!! Lookin' to me like we should be able to get a pretty capable one for $1500-$1600 or so. And also, I don't know where you are AMAN, but I have a 5' wide, 10' long cargo trailer that didn't cost an arm and a leg.
geposted Sat 31 Dec 16 @ 6:41 pm
I'm in New Jersey, and have been looking at a trailer. My problem is, my house is on a hill, with a steep incline. The hitch would probably bottom out getting into the driveway. Then, it would be stored on that incline. I would need a heavy duty chain or something to secure it, because I could see some young idiot removing the blocks, sending it down the driveway.

Yep, in your case a good mini sounds like the deal, and they are very nice also.:)
